Topic: [SOLVED] USB Installation troubles on Asus Eee PC 1015PEB

I got this netbook recently, and I'd love to install crunchbang on it, but I've hit a snag on installing it.

I made a live USB of crunchbang with unetbootin, and the live environment seems to be fine, but when I go to install it, I can't get past the mounting cd drive part. I always says that it can't be mounted because there's obviously no CD drive in this thing. I tried to manually specify the drive the USB is located, (/dev/sdb according to "sudo ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/*usb*"), but I still get an error message saying nothing could be found. When I try to load drivers from the install media by, it say they can't be found or there might be something wrong with my installation media. However, I formatted the USB stick and put crunchbang back on it via unetbootin, but I still had the same results.

I'm typing this in a bit of a hurry, so I'm sorry for any lack of details. Where would be the best place to start for solving this issue?

Firstly what you want to do when making a USB for #! is not use unetbootin. Sometimes it'll work alright and sometimes not, sort of hit or miss really. What you want to do is have a look at this link, for all your #! USB installation needs.

That's going to set you up with a nice little walk-through for making your USB the proper way, whether your on Linux or Windows. Alternatively you can have a go at tweaking your BIOS settings (maybe USB Legacy or something is fouling it up) but I really recommend you just drop unetbootin, or try a different USB stick if you have one (some of them don't always play nice). Hope that helps you out a bit, all the luck mate.

Forums are boring, drinking is awesome.

I'll give the dd method a try then, probably on a different USB stick too, when I have a chance later today. And I'll look around the  BIOS for any sort of USB Legacy settings, because I don't recall seeing what it was when I had to go in to change the boot order.

Gosh, didn't think  a Debian based distro would give me any installation issues, since I didn't even have any while installing Arch Linux on my laptop... tongue

UPDATE:

Did the dd method and the installation worked fine. The system seems to be working perfectly!

Thank you!

I agree about unetbootin squirreliness;  I do use it but get failures about 1/3rd of the time.

my first linux kernel build was on a 386-16sx with 6MB SIPP RAM ($50/MB!)
