Topic: #! 20120207 release available!

http://crunchbang.org/download

Whee!

Edit: Searched for a thread about it on the forums already, but couldn't find one. Downloading 32-bit and seeding, and will then download and seed 64-bit. Do any of these include the 686 image by default? I'm assuming there is no upgrade route though -- these ISO's would be for fresh installations?

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

You noticed! big_smile

I am trying to write some notes about the new images now, meanwhile feel free to download and have a play. Regarding the 686 flavour kernels, both 32-bit images now ship with them.

P.S. Thanks for seeding, I appreciate it! smile

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

"Good news, everyone!"

Hooray!
Downloading right now and will seed after that.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

nice! looking forward to those notes, will get a download & seeding session going once i get home. i need a bigger HD so i can install more distros.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

I feel like I am asking an obvious question so I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere.  I installed the stable 20111125 release a few weeks ago, but if I am already running the 3.2 kernel after running apt-get dist-upgrade last week, would I benefit by downloading and installing the 20120207 release?  I actually wrote something about my experiences regarding dist-upgrade on my blog here.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

^ well, i guess corenominal's notes will have to explain that. wonder what else is new in this release.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

I see that there is both a stable and a back-port version of 32- and 64-bit -- so four new images. So the "stable" release would be like last year's February release (no back-ports) I'm presuming. Let's speculate until corenominal has had time to post the notes smile The 32-bit versions now have the 686 image (I've only used the 32-bit versions), but from what corenominal said earlier in this thread it sounded like the 64-bit versions had always had the 686 image...?

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

the 64-bit images are Arch-based. smile

Some hints here maybe, for those who haven't seen that thread.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

^ yeah, those are some hints indeed. i'm still going to look into other login managers (or no login manager at all) because i don't like the 'Gnome' in 'Gnome Display Manager' so much. i'd like my system free of gnomes. they are tiny and annoying when they crawl places they don't belong.

Looks like corenominal already answered the question in that thread, thanks for linking to it for me.  smile

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

@rhowaldt: I might look into an alternative too if I get bored this weekend. Any suggestions?

I'm in agreement.  Dirty little things.  I much prefer Brownies, even though they tend to ninja loot things like keys.  I once saw one jump over my sleeping wife, looked like a big brown hairy ball with legs and a tail.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

Downloading, will seed while demand is there. I got a miserable upload speed, but i did manage to seed about 6 GB on each arch in November - quite high a demand. Maybe I'll run some stats this time.

NB, Great Leader, the styling of the download section on #!.org is phenomenal.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

@corenominal: Is there going to be a blog post on the crunchbanglinux.org home page about the new images? Might not have noticed the new images if not for SabreWolfy.

Edit:
I am probably just jumping the gun and everything will happen in due time...

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

@nablacksax:
there will be a post about the new images, see corenominal's first reply in this thread.
i don't really have much suggestions for you as far as trying out more distros. i've only been trying out Arch for 2 days now, and am planning to check out stuff like Debian and LFS too, eventually. and maybe Slackware or something. gotta keep challenging myself.

Oops. I was asking about login managers, not distros. Maybe that isn't something I can just change without major system changes. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!

After staying with CrunchBang since 2008 I started distrohopping about three months ago, and now I feel so dirty. Maybe a fresh install of CrunchBang is just what I need to feel clean again. big_smile

Downloaded fast. Seeding now. Installing on a virgin partition on my new OCZ SSD after I get some sleep.

@nablacksax: ah sorry, no i'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to login-managers. i've heard of LightDM, Slim is obviously out, and there's probably some more. i think, in the end, i'll just run without a login manager.

Re: #! 20120207 release available!
