Topic: [Main issue solved]: Install fails: getting thrown to xterm

I've tried twice to install, and both times the installation has completed with apparent success. But when I try to boot from hard drive I get these errors:

No Exec line in the session file:07IceWM. Running the GNOME failsafe session instead.

I click OK and get:

Could not find the GNOME installation, will try running the "Failsafe xterm" session.

I then get another dialog, suggesting that I can fix the errors from the xterm dialog (I would if I could!) Then I'm in xterm, feeling like it's 1989.

The second time I installed, I tried the xforcevesa option on starting the LiveCD (suggested by someone on the #crunchbang IRC channel) but it made no difference.

Background info:

  • I can run the LiveCD fine

  • I'm using a ThinkPad R60.

  • I had enormous troubles with Xubuntu 7.04 and Ubuntu 7.10 in this machine - they never worked properly (various bugs, especially the wifi). I eventually ended up on Mandriva, which was better but still buggy. I was only enticed back to Ubuntu by Crunchbang's nice implementation of Openbox, and I'm hoping Ubuntu will be better this time.

  • When I start the LiveCD I get this error - not sure if it's relevant, but it doesn't cause any problem that I'm aware of:

Error: Unable to establish connection with FAM.
Do you have "FAM" or "Gain" installed and running?

Any help appreciated!

Just a shot in the dark here....Have you tried to reinstall gmone from xterminal, or perhaps xfce or something? It is strange that you have had issues with multiple distros on your Thinkpad. Perhaps there is an issue with the HD?

No, haven't tried. I could figure out how, but since my aim is specifically to run Openbox, I'm not sure why I'd install GNOME or Xfce. (I presume you mean install, not reinstall?)

It is strange that you have had issues with multiple distros on your Thinkpad. Perhaps there is an issue with the HD?

It has been Ubuntu that has given me the biggest problems - and a significant minority of users seem to find that Ubuntu doesn't work properly for them, if I go by forums, and my own conversations with other Linux users.

PCLinuxOS and Mandriva 2008.0 worked very well. Then 2008.1 had wifi problems (a general problem with the driver associated with that Linux kernel). Skype also stopped working in that version, and in 2009.0, but again, this was a general problem (confirmed in the errata for those versions) not just my machine. 2009.0 worked pretty well other than Skype - installing LXDE broke a few things, but the important stuff worked, and since Mandriva with LXDE seems to be fairly fringe, I can't really comment much on that.

So... I suspect it's not HD related, but how would I check?

Thanks.

Re: [Main issue solved]: Install fails: getting thrown to xterm

Yes I did mean install and not reinstall. I find it peculiar that you have had this problem with multiple Linux distros. I was unaware of the errata that you mentioned, but as you noted, this was only in a small albeit growing minority. I figured that if you were able to install and run gnome as well as gdm, that there shouldnt be a reason why you wouldn't be able to reinstall openbox.

This thread suggests that you have a Gnome error and suggests a Gnome install. This thread indicates that the problem may be with PCmanFM.

This may be unrelated, but what speed are you burning the ISO? Perhaps you could try to burn the #! iso @ the lowest speed and then do a Guided Install. If that works, then the problem is your burner and the Live CD's. If that doesnt change anything, then I am sorry but I don't know how else to help.

You can check your hard drive for errors via a tool from the manufacture website, although you would have to be using Windows. I don't know how to check the Linux hard drive for errors offhand, but I'm sure that you can Google that and find a suitable solution.

What happens when you get to xterm and you type sudo gdm? Or are you unable to do that? Also, when you boot up #!, if you hit esc I believe you can go into the recovery mode. Have you tried that?

Post back with more info as you try various solutions. I wish I could be of more help.

I confess I'm mystified too. I've sat down with Linux geeks though, and spent a lot of time on forums, and noone's ever figured out a fundamental problem with the machine (other than being a laptop, and laptops being much more problematic than desktops). Anything specific we've actually figured out has turned out to be a known bug in the distro. (One of the good things about Mandriva is the errata page on the wiki, so finding out about known bugs was much less of an ordeal than with other distros.) This is annoying tho, considering one of the main reasons I bought a ThinkPad is that it was supposed to be more compatible with Linux than other laptops.

E.g. I spent a couple of weeks hanging around at the OLPC office in Boston last year, and a guy who contributes to the Linux kernel explained to me that thanks to a buggy Intel wireless driver, the only way to get my wifi connection to work reliably was to use a distro with an older kernel. (Thankfully that's been fixed as of late 2008.)

Unfortunately I'm now in a remote location with no geeks to consult in person.

I figured that if you were able to install and run gnome as well as gdm, that there shouldnt be a reason why you wouldn't be able to reinstall openbox.

This thread suggests that you have a Gnome error and suggests a Gnome install.

I've never installed anything from command line, but for want of other options, I'll give it a try. Not today - I'm staying with the Crunchbang LiveCD as I need to work.

This thread indicates that the problem may be with PCmanFM.

PCmanFM works fine when running on LiveCD.

This may be unrelated, but what speed are you burning the ISO? Perhaps you could try to burn the #! iso @ the lowest speed and then do a Guided Install. If that works, then the problem is your burner and the Live CD's.

I already ran the check CD option on loading the LiveCD, and there were no errors reported - so, is there still a doubt about it? (I burned the CD on a Windows machine where I was staying last week, so a problem there wouldn't explain the pattern of problems).

You can check your hard drive for errors via a tool from the manufacture website, although you would have to be using Windows. I don't know how to check the Linux hard drive for errors offhand, but I'm sure that you can Google that and find a suitable solution.

A Linux admin guy I met in Dec 2008, when I was still in the middle of my Ubuntu hassles, burned some kind of utility to LiveCD, to check something on my machine... can't remember if it was the hard disk though. He was, as with others, mystified, as Ubuntu was working well for him.

What happens when you get to xterm and you type sudo gdm? Or are you unable to do that?

I tried, and got:

gdm[6018]: WARNING: GDM already running. Aborting!
GDM already running. Aborting!

Also, when you boot up #!, if you hit esc I believe you can go into the recovery mode. Have you tried that?

I tried it, on your suggestion. I tried a few options, including some checking (no errors reported), and something about fixing the x window manager (it was yesterday - can't remember exactly). When I rebooted I got the same error.

Thanks

Re: [Main issue solved]: Install fails: getting thrown to xterm

It sounds like theres a problem with your openbox xsession file, have a look in /usr/share/xsessions/openbox.desktop, the contents of mine are:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Openbox Session
Comment=Use this session to run Openbox as your desktop environment
Exec=openbox-session
Icon=
Type=Application

Your original error message seemed to think that you had no exec line.

Rob,

have a look in /usr/share/xsessions/openbox.desktop, the contents of mine are:

Thanks for the suggestion - but my file is identical to yours :-(.

I'm confused by the first error I get referring to IceWM.

Re: [Main issue solved]: Install fails: getting thrown to xterm

My system is working! Thanks Rob, for your Identica messages pointing me to look into the selected session. (I was a bit confused at first, but as I started doing it realized that "session" refers to the desktop environment and/or window manager in use.)

I remembered that I'd selected the automatic login for my account. So when I started this morning, I typed:

sudo gdmsetup

and went to one of the tabs (2nd last, I think) and turned off the automatic login. Then when I restarted, I hit one of the buttons under the login text box, before I logged in, and chose Openbox instead of using the last session.

And it worked! Although I got a huge error message:

[b]GTK+ icon theme is not properly set[/b]
This usually means you don't have an XSETTINGS manager running. [i](Yada yada yada...)[/i]

when I clicked OK, everything worked. (The skin looks a bit different, with plain grey tabs in Firefox, presumably due to this error - not pretty, but actually easier to read.)

Thanks also to nabilalk and everyone who took the time to read. Persistence has paid off.

Re: [Main issue solved]: Install fails: getting thrown to xterm

Glad to hear that you are able to log in. You may want to post a new question to deal with the theme issue specifically.

Re: [Main issue solved]: Install fails: getting thrown to xterm

Hi Chris,

Excellent glad to hear it worked out!

I have not idea what the other error may be about - my advice would just be to reboot and then see if you get it again!

Cheers,

Rob
