Topic: New install on Acer Aspire One with Kuki kernel

Just for the record: I've installed #! on AAO 110 (SSD) today.
1.I followed instructions on the WIKI : http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/aspireone - splendid - big thanks!
2.Because the Kuki kernel download site is no longer working I "googled" it and download the kernel from here: http://www.kuki.me/downloads/

Everything is working big_smile (much better than on default Linpus installation!) & me is a very happy camper cool

Hi tamihania. I just did the same thing a few days ago and am quite impressed with the speed of Crunch Bang and how well it fit's the AAO after loading the Sickboy kernel. Finally! A distro that's better than Linpus Lite that doesn't take forever to boot. I wonder though why Acer doesn't seem to care about improving or adequately supporting the Linux distro that they ship with their netbook. Seems kinda flaky to me.

Hm, I was asking myself the same question. smile
I think the answer is simple - money. I do not think they are interested in promoting really good Linux alternative and pay developers for maintaining it. What they are interested in is maximizing profit by cutting the costs. There are probably also some other factors...
Anyway, I am very happy I installed #! - we will also install it on my husband AAO soon - he likes it, too! And, well, lets spread the word about this fantastic alternative for netbooks. This is what we can do! smile

Your right.
I try to spread the word. Most people I mention Linux to and the benefits of open source software just get a glazed far away look in their eyes.
One thing I am starting to do (well I've done it with one computer so far) is resurrect old computers that nobody really wants anymore and load Linux on them and give them to people who are hard pressed to afford a computer. Get them surfing the web and e-mailing and it opens up opportunities for them.
Anyway, keep up the good fight.

Acer and Linux Linpus are two different companies. They have nothing to do with each other except that Acer has chosen to ship their netbooks with Linpus on. But otherwise I agree, Linpus is an odd choice. Why Acer chose that distro is beyond me. They could have chosen Sidux, Puppylinux or, heck, even SLAX with a ready-to-go user interface with useful apps preinstalled -- all very lightweight, distros which are updated frequently, have open communities and don't have any obscure webpages (contrary to Linpus.com). It would have kept their Linux customers less frustrated.

I remember reading that one of the reasons Acer chose Linpus was because it has very good support for the Chinese language. Perhaps Acer is selling a lot of netbooks to China.
Or the reasons for Acer choosing Linpus could be quite convoluted. Maybe the Head Developer of Linpus's son is married to the daughter of Acer's CEO lol
It's people like Corenominal who's dedication continues to make Linux a positive option that keeps Microsoft's "proprietary police" at bay.
The "Rebel Forces" must not let the "Imperial Forces" have complete domination! "Use the Force (Penguin) Luke". smile

Yeah, the Media Player shipped with Linpus only plays back Chinese video files I read somewhere. Good for those who're using those files, but what about the rest of the world? Well, after a year with the Acer Aspire One on the market, still no fixes (not even a bloody codec) for the rest of us. So if you own the Linux model with Linpus on you're bound to download and install another media player if you want to watch videos. In order to do that you need at least some CLI interaction. Nice work. That's not the best experience for newcomers to Linux. No wonder why so many Acer netbooks with Linux Linpus preinstalled are being returned. Acer and Linpus are giving Linux a bad rap. Seems to me Acer pretty much are saying; "Thanks for buying our product, now go *beep* yourself!"

Back on topic. Now, if only more netbooks would come preinstalled with #! CrunchBang, perhaps there would be less frustrated first times users of Linux. smile  (Or maybe #! is a little too intimidating for new Linux users?)

A new Kuki kernel has just been released for the Acer netbooks btw. Worth checking out.

A new Kuki kernel has just been released for the Acer netbooks btw. Worth checking out.

I think I have the latest kernel by Sickboy since I've only had #! on my AA1 for a few days. It has made using Crunch Bang a real pleasure and I am very impressed with the speed it loads and runs. At first I thought #! was going to be a little tough to figure out but after searching the forum and persevering a bit, I have found it not too difficult to change my theme/wallpaper, add a program to the menu, give it a shortcut key and make it show up in Conky. However, I think it might be a bit of a stretch for new users who are trying to shed XP or Vista. Many of them are spoiled by point and click and would be too intimidated to find and edit the correct files to make changes to their desktop. What would really help newbies switching to Linux would be a well written manual that would get them started. I know that most everything newbies need to know is in the forum but............ searching for answers in a forum can be frustrating at first. A manual is linear, starting from the very basic and building on that. Anyway, that's my humble opinion smile

I installed CrunchBang on my AAO 110 a couple of months ago, and I'm very pleased, using Sickboy's kernel. It's fast-  and easy to upgrade and configure, like any modern distro.

I installed #! yesterday following the crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/aspireone and I *think* it all downloaded fine, although I am inexperienced so can't check files etc.
My wlan works, but is flaky after reboot sometimes it doesn't sniff out any wireless networks at all, which is weird. When this happens I just reboot (sometimes a couple of times needed) and it seems OK. I didn't do the extra wifi install in the howto page, because my wifi works kind of - would you recommend that ?
Also, my mic doesn't work in Skype and haven't tested webcam yet. Fingers crossed, no doubt I'll be on these forums asking lots of bone questions for months to come !!

Maybe  U should download and install the Sickby's kernel from http://www.aspireonekernel.com/ to get the mic to work in skype, and then see if the wifi also works better with this kernel, before U eventually do the tweaks from the wiki.

Not sure I can be much help, but I tried the optional Madwifi driver as per instructions on howto, and it didn't seem to work for me (couldn't log in) but I may have done something wrong. I reverted back to original driver and wireless seems to work fine for me now. If you are experiencing problems maybe try the Madwifi driver and see what happens.

In my case I installed the madwifi drivers and everything worked fine.

Just to let you know, I had some problems with my wifi network card in the AAO A150 (both with Linpus and Ubuntu) From time to time, the network card suddenly dissapeared from the system and it turned out to be a hardware problem with the card. After googling some time, I found that many people had similar problems with their wifi cards also.

to Calligrapher 218- did you check the sound input in Skype options is set to HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0):- that did it for me

AA1 110L- linpus, gOS, Fed10xfce. Debian, now found the one that works, looks great and is snappy, thank you crunchbangers for a brilliant distro.

I just wanted to say thanks for Crunchbang.
MY AAO has had so many linux systems on It I'm getting expert at install by every method.
Crunchbang with the Kuki kernal works. and gives me a simple portable pltform on which I can use latex and Lyx.
Claws is good as a simple mail checking system till I get home.
My last attempt at a system was 9.04 Ubuntu. Nice but too bloated for my needs. OO and Evolution are just too much. too hungry.

The cost of maintaining a Linux distro is minimal - look how many people do it for fun. I suspect that Acer have decided against Linpus and are inclining on a replacement that isn't yet ready for market. Probably the smartest option would be too secretly partner with Google to use Android, let Google's usability people come up with an iPhone class interface, then hit Microsoft like a storm with Atom and ARM based Netbooks running an interface with real "wow" factor. If they are doing this then they'd just coast with Linpus until they are ready.

Other options are they're waiting for UBR to be ready or planning on switching to Windows 7 only.

perhaps someone here can help... I installed crunchbang and had it working fine, tried to install kuki kernel but the installer failed at the last second, saying the post-install stopped. I was then left with an entry in grub for kuki that booted to a blank screen.
I managed to uninstall successfully, but any further attempts to install netted the same results.
I'm on an Acer Aspire One AO751h.
I asked around on the kuki chat... someone thought it might be a hardware compatability problem, but didn't have a linux box available to test.
Anyone else have any other ideas on what might be causing it? Or, if it is a hardware problemn (or anything really) anything I can do to fix it?

None of the links there are currently working.  sad  Anyone know where I can find drivers for an Acer Aspire One AOD250 Model No. NAV70.  My GF wants #! too !  big_smile

Sorry about that.  I was trying to dig around and find an answer rather than posting a new thread and I couldn't find anything current for Acer netbooks.  I didn't realize it would be a problem.  Since I already blew it and bumped this thread, mind telling me which link will actually work to get the kuki-kernal?  I tried them all including the torrent file which I would be happy to seed if I could just find it.
