Mint's popularity was all about proprietary codices being preloaded, thus making it even more "linux newbie" friendly than the parent, Ubuntu. There were fewer distros like that only a few years ago, PCLinuxOS was another.
Mint also included the "Bling" out of the box. Compiz was enabled by default, before that was done in Ubuntu if I recall.
I liked Mint but my system was even more bogged down by it than running stock Ubuntu. Now after using CrunchBang for a while I wouldn't ever use Mint, even if I had a better system.
I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.
