Topic: #! game?

Poll:

Do you play any games on #!, and if so which?

Which games do you think are , overall , in line with the overall theme of minmalist, light, and perhaps little geeky?

Do you think including a game or 2 would serve either purpose of a) a distraction or b)demonstrate capabilities.

My answers: No games added (yet)
Probably a variation of life / ca, nethack, or chess would be most in line with the overall #! themes.
Could possibly be both, but don't want to overdo it, either.

Re: #! game?

I play Urban Terror, but I dont think youre looking for large 3D games...

Re: #! game?

I play WoW, 12 Sky and sometimes mess with my old accounts on Guild Wars.  I have also played a bit of Silkroad Online.  All are MMORPGs.

I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.

Re: #! game?

Just curious, this could be another thread in itself, but in short answer, how did you setup Guild Wars to be playable?

Also let me revise the question from here on out to be native linux games

Re: #! game?

If you want to use as little space as possible (not games for gamers, just time killer games), but have something to kill time, try

- pacman4console
- ghextris

I was looking for eee-friendly (cursor-friendly), family-friendly games.   ghextris screen was too long for the eee, but pafcman4console was fine.
Both games are in /usr/games/...  after using synaptic.

Re: #! game?

One of my fave little time-killer games is Klickety (I think it's now in the kdegames-kde4 package but I haven't installed it on my new lappy yet). Almost completely mindless (the way I play it anyway) but quite useful when doing stuff like waiting for video to encode. smile

UPDATE: Cripes.. Klickety has apparently removed since KDE4. Aaargh. When I upgraded to Intrepid from Hardy on this desktop I think I lost it! sad

UPDATE2: Yay! My dear Klickety and I were reunited when I found the deb file on this page: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/i … 9-0ubuntu1

For guild wars I did nothing special, just installed using Wine.

Re: #! game?

I like #! just the way it is, if I want something I just add it myself, this way I don't get what the rest of the world wants.....

I think you misunderstand the thread is about games, not about adding games to #! install.

Re: #! game?

Warzone 2100
Counterstrike (WINE)
PlayStation Portable games (dev kit) (WINE)
Base Zodiac
Hyperiums

Re: #! game?

Are there any classic casual games that don't need gnome installed? the gnome-games collection wants to install quite a lot of extras.

I'm thinking connect-four, tetris, klondike (and other solitaire card games), chinese chequers, etc.  Most seem to be available as flash on the web, but I want standalone, or erhaps a way to download the flash and run that standalone...

Re: #! game?

Sofar Scorched3d(3D Update Of Scorched Earth), ArmagetronAD(Tron clone in 3D), extremetuxracer, and YSflight(through WINE-just got wine installed earlier today/yesterday). I will probably Install TrackMania Nation Forever(racing) and Wolfstien Enemy Territory(online FPS) , Babylon 5: I Have Found Her.

Re: #! game?

you can use these instructions for downloading the flash game:
Firefox for Newbies
a. Click Tools - Page Info
b. Click the Media Tab on the Page Info Windows
c. The media tab has a complete list (with preview) of Images, CSS Files and Shockwave Flash files that were downloaded by the Firefox browser while rendering (loading) the page.
d. Scroll down the list and locate the swf file.
e. Click the "Save As" button. Select some directory on your hard drive and save the file (No need for a third-party plug-in)

Re: #! game?

I thought about installing gnome-games just for the patience at first, but there is a better option for a klondike game: PySol.
Then, I much liked K-Shisen, while using KDE 3x a year ago and didn't know there is a substitute for it: X-Shisen. I can waste an hour or so with this one.
In the last weeks I fiddled with wine. The only old game I was able to get to work with wine is my favoriteat the same time: Heroes of Might & Magic 3. It especially looks awsome in 1680x1050 resolution. I see details now I never knew they existed.
So, as long as lacking 3D-support for my onboard ATI/AMD card prevents me from Open Arena and the like, I'm happy with those three.

"I see details now I never knew they existed."

LOL.  Are you an audiophile?
Thanks for the PySol tip, looks good.

Whoever recommended World of Goo (maybe on another thread that matched my "game" search), thanks!  What a fantastically well put-together little game.

Re: #! game?

yeah I love world of goo, need to start playing again though. I only got to the second world and spend to much time coding and on the forums and messing around with my media center to play games...I don't even play my wii now sad

Re: #! game?

YSFlight has a linux version. For #!, since its Ubuntu based, you have to download a pack containing 2 files that you just copy to your ysflight dir to run the game, otherwise theres a segmentation fault.

WINE might be easier because linux uses exact address for the .lst files, and windows doesnt, so the WINE version may need less tweaking to get it to work if you use addons.

Re: #! game?

When I get my Dell Mini 10v I think I will be trying Flightgear and maybe a few games in wine like Command and Conquer.

Running Crunchbang on eee pc 701 and Dell Mini 10v.

Re: #! game?

Chess is great fun to play on Linux, I've enjoyed many a great game on FICS using eboard.  It'd be spectacular if there was a nice ncurses-based interface instead of a graphical one, but until I learn to program I guess I'll just have to wait!

Other than that, the only "real" gaming I do is in Sauerbraten, where I can get surgical with the shotgun.  As far as FPS goes it's pretty minimal, the load times are near-instant and it plays well on less powerful machiens even though it's graphically impressive.  I was disappointed to not see it mentioned here, you folks should give it a go!  It's free and open source smile

Re: #! game?

i just installed scummvm for some oldskool nostalgia with my old fave point and click adventure games.  most seem to have gone "abandonware".  day of the tentacle, full throtle, steel sky, amazon, etc.

hopelessly addicted to turret/tower defence games.
used to play konquest alot, but dont have that installed in crunchbang (thankfully).

in my last crunchbang install i had a whole pile of tiny old style games installed, and set up to launch on keypresses.  was loadsa fun.  i dont remember any of them except oolite, only because i'm a maaaaaassive elite fan.  (frontier first encounters and awaiting "elite4"... think that'll be released on linux?)

Frozen Bubble (yes, I know...)
World of Goo

I'm missing a game called "Vexed", which I had on my Handspring Visor ten years ago. It was *very* addictive!
