Topic: Searching files

I don't know if I do something wrong (certainly), but when I try to find a file via the search (F3 in pcmanfm), very often it doesn't find anything even if I know the file exist.
Is there an option somewhere I missed or maybe another application which will work better.

Re: Searching files

if you don't mind the commandline find works very well, for example:
find /home -name mysong.mp3
would find any mp3 named mysong in your home directory.

I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.

Re: Searching files

Yes I know that command line can do the job (actually I used it as the other one didn't work), but I like to have the result and choose in the list just by clicking.

I read something in a magazine few times ago about searching and different type of search, or fast but not obligatory update with all files or more slow but search with the actual state of the computer (I don't know if I am very clear tongue ). Maybe it is something like that in the search in pcmanfm.

Re: Searching files

heres a post from a while ago that might help http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … searching/ not sure if it's the same issue you are having though.

Re: Searching files

I find the built in search frustrating.  If you want a GUI have a look at http://www.twotoasts.de/index.php?/page … mmary.html

Re: Searching files

It is exactly the same issue big_smile
It seems there is no real solution exept lauch the search from the / ...

I was thinking to install something like catfish which looks great on the paper, will see if it is possible to integrate more or less in pcmanfm smile

Edit : thanks fhsm, I was looking at that big_smile

Re: Searching files

Catfish works very well, I will try to see if there is something to integrate it in pcmanfm that I like except this point of search.

Re: Searching files

I have a custom action set up in Thunar to search in any directory on right-click... It might be worth checking out the PCManFM source to see how easy it would be to add custom action functionality -- that's the only reason I use Thunar rather than PCManFM, really.

Re: Searching files

It's just one of the reasons I've given pcmanfm the flick recently and gone back to using thunar. The other is its mount rules and the way it screws with file permissions on external drives.

Re: Searching files

On a more practical note gnome search tool does a nice job and has full text searching if needed.

Yeah, I typically steer clear of all the Gnome "we want to run everything" programs out there, but I'm a big fan of the Gnome Utils package. Baobab is especially cool.

Yes, maybe I will try thunar. Is there the tab system as in pcmanfm, because it is something i use a lot.

Re: Searching files

So what is the perfect file manager, with tab system, good mount rules (for omns because I didn't understood the matter tongue ), good looking and a performing search function big_smile

Since you didn't mention speed.. Nautilus should be your way to go..

Midnight commander, well it's not tabbed but has two separate screens, it's installed by default in #!, check it out big_smile

Re: Searching files

I don't find it or how to launch it.

Midnight commander should be in  "Terminal Apps" section in menu, or just type mc in terminal. smile

Re: Searching files

In fact it wasn't install, thanks wink
In fact I'm not sure I will use it big_smile
