Topic: nice quake style terminal

Just in case you hadn't heard of it tilda is a nice quake style terminal that I use. to install:

sudo apt-get install tilda

the default shortcut key is F1. I'd recommend going into the preferences by right clicking on the terminal and setting start tilda hidden to on, then add tilda & to your autostart.sh .

Re: nice quake style terminal

I've used tilda quite a bit in the past but find it a bit cumbersome. I does look nice though smile

Apart from starting 'hidden' I also like to untick, 'Display on all workspaces' and 'Always on top'. Enabling transparency is also a nice option

Re: nice quake style terminal

I really like tilda, but it does have one major disadvantage when compared to the original Quake terminal, the GOD command is not recognised! big_smile

I also really like tilda, omns would my elaborate when you say cumbersome? I find it a great complement of the alt+f3 menu.

Re: nice quake style terminal

i've tried tilda before, but not very satisfied compared with yakuake (used to kde user)
however, there is another alternative, try guake, i think it's a lot better than tilda wink

Wasn't it  "impluse 9" or am I thinking Doom?

Does seen to install easily in #!. Apt-get without any dependancies but on first run -- some error about .gconf-sessions or something (not repeatable), but is installed.

Kind of cool yet does have some window decorations. It seems a trade-off. Some quake style terminals have no window decorations but guake has tabs. Tab lovers rejoice, tab haters, run! Keybinding bound to F12 which seems safe. Worth a look.

Re: nice quake style terminal

F12 is the same key binding yakuake uses.

Guake is largely intended as a Gnome version of Yakuake, but it will get side-tracked and end up doing something stupid probably.

Yakuake is exactly what I want out of a quake terminal, but there's just too many dependencies, coz it's based on KDE

These dropdown terminals are very convenient; just press a button to show or hide it. No windows.

Giving tilda a try.  Anyone else find that transparency doesn't work?   FYI here's the error message that shows up on my first run:

Re: nice quake style terminal

Transparency doesn't work on my tilda either.

Incidentally, I couldn't change to a black-on-white theme either. I can change the text colour, but I can't change the back to anything other than black.

yep you're right, the last time i try download yakuake it said i had to download 100mb of dependencies packages first

Yeah, Yakuake require KDE Konsole to be installed, so that was a deal breaker for me. I am liking Tilda on my home machine, even if it is not transparent.

I'm STILL considering yakuake, because it can't be denied that it's the best version of these terminals.

100MB is a lot, but if I put crunchbang on my laptop, as I am lkely to do when 9.04 debuts, I'll have an 120GB HDD, so 100MB won't be an issue, just a pain.

Tilda's transparency works fine here hmm

Works fine for me as well..

Re: nice quake style terminal

just installed Guake on my eee 1000 .....  it works GREAT ...

Had problems with the one from the Ubuntu repository ... grabed the .deb installer from the the guake home site and it worked fine ...

so  ignore the warning about  there being a newer version  from the package installer ...

Re: nice quake style terminal

Transparency in tilda works fine for me. Should probably note that I have eyecandy enabled in my autostart.sh

Re: nice quake style terminal

I installed Tilda, and it pretty quickly became my go-to terminal. I even found myself using the command line more, which is something I want to encourage myself in.

Then one day F1 did nothing. 'Segmentation fault' it said. The solution is to delete your config files and restart, which works, but has the predictable downside of losing your configuration.

And then, a few days later, it broke again. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on here? hmm

And this, my friends, is why i took the hit and just installed yakuake.

Re: nice quake style terminal

I know it wouldn't be light weight like the rest of crunchbang but I want a better animation for a quake style terminal, like lowering in from the top or something (See Visor for OS X). Anything like that out there?

Tilda does that. I didn't turn it on. Transparency also started working for me after my first 'big crash', so you know. smile

No one have any suggestions for me?

yakuake does it, and I think it has transparency options too.
