Topic: Gnote
If someone likes Tomboy but don't like 15 MB of RAM wasted, try Gnote
Has 3x smaller footprint.
As far I've tried, runs well.
Best regards!

I have tried Gnote and I like it, it is good software. If I remember correctly, I tried it back when it first hit the headlines, it was quite an early release and it still had some features (synchronisation etc.) that had not been implemented. Has this changed recently?
I've not tried synchonisation yet. Yes, I read about this issue and will check out.
While we wait, I've tried ZIM - desktop wiki. Even lighter and it can shows pictures and have interesting plug-ins.
Regards!
I've been using Gnote as a Tomboy replacement, and find it fast and very stable (More stable than Zim, which seems to crash and/or hang often). Lighter than Tomboy, almost as functional. It's my choice for the forseeable future, and of course it's "Mono Free!". ![]()

By strange coincidence, I had a play with ZIM last night. I did not really use it enough to give any opinions, but first impressions were good. I have also been playing around with TiddlyWiki again. One day I may make up my mind and actually settle on using one or the other, meanwhile, I think I will stick to using plain old text files. ![]()
Agree, Gnote is lighter but ZIM have more features (inserting pictures, dinamical to-do vith icons, plug-ins, ..) And again agree, sometimes is buggy.
Thisi is general problem when you have more than one choice
Which one to settle down with.

I use tiddlywiki at work for my notes, works pretty well. I can't install any software so the fact it is self-contained is really nice.
As I often testing various software, I've tried KeepNote. On first site, I was amazed, but then founded bugs and drop out.
Now is new release and I might test it.

KeepNote - so far, so good. I have 2 objections now:
1. Print options doesn't exists
2. No table support in documents. (Or I can't find it)
Otherwise, runs fast, seems stable (someone found a bug ?)
I use evernote on windows xp and i can update my notebooks in it through it's firefox plugin in linux. Sadly the plugin doesnt work in firefox 3.5.1 so i installed shareaholic which can do all the clipping/copying stuff too for evernote. So it's all good.
thx IgorP for the keepnote tip
it runs really fast and looks really promising..only problem is how do i import my hundreds of Basket notes ![]()
thx again

Is there any disadvantage to using Basket Notes? I check out the website, and it looks pretty neet.
Also, for the desktop wiki's, such as gnote...can they be used without being shared online? I was thinking of using gnote or Basket Notes for taking notes in class (since fall semester starts on the 24th) but I dont want to share biochem notes with the rest of the world. ![]()
Hi stopie
im a long time basket user and really love it. the only problem is that basket is VERY slow to load on my msi wind with crunchbang (i do have thousands of notes
....). thats why im very interested in trying keepnote which seems to be better in dealing with large databases....i wish there was a smooth way of importing from one another

Thanks for the response zeltak. Do you think for just school notes it ought to be quick enough to be functional in class for me?
hi again
yeah should be quick enough. there is a kde4 version in development currently but thats a few months from being ready.
try keepnote (http://rasm.ods.org/keepnote) for quicker load times, im testing it now for uni note taking ![]()

Basket has heavy dependencies IMO (KDE). Otherways is interesting program and useful too. Very configurable.
I've tried TreeLine. Uses Qt. In oposite to Basket which has totaly floating work bench, TL has rigid structure of data types. But, you can set some data types simply enough to use this program for note taking. One thing might annoy; if you want rich format of text, you have to use HTML tags.
It's worth to try (subjective).
Enjoy!
Thanks for all the feedback guys!...time to make a decision ![]()

I saw TiddlyWiki before and don't saw much of use about it.. Then I look again, and guess what.. I don't need Gnote, ZIM, TreeLine, KeepNote, ..
I'm totally in TiddlyWiki. On work and for private as well.
So simple, so powerfull! Works on every platform, has powerfull tag support (usefull), has great plug-ins (be carefull to not making TW bloated..)
My recomandation.

I was using a tiddlywiki too until I realized my fav, MonkeyGTD doesn't work on Chromium browsers.
I have just started to use Tiddlywiki, it will come in really useful for university.

I use only CheckBox plugin and ToDo Toggle plugin. Nothing else. Works on Windows, Linux, (IE, Mozilla, Opera and Iron).
Yes, some plugins doesn't work well on other browsers.. Mozilla has the biggest base of TW plugin (IMO).
Regards!
Instead of tiddlywiki, i'd prefer the minimalistic "wiki on a stick" http://stickwiki.sourceforge.net/
Not so full of features, but it does what I need to.
