Topic: two slim problems

From what I read about slim you are supposed to put halt as your username if you want to shutdown, but it doesn't do anything for me. The shutdown command looks right in my slim.conf, any idea what could be causing this?
Also openbox-session is my first choice of sessions, if I press F1 it comes up as the first option, but if I don't press F1 it logs my into gnome... Thanks for any ideas on this since slim is working a lot better for me except these two issues.

I have not had much chance to play around with SLiM yet, but I believe I have experienced the same halt issue in the past. Are you using the version provided from the repositories?

It would be good if we could nail some of these problems earlier rather than later, so I am also interested to hear from anyone else using SLiM.

I'm using the version from the 9.10 repos, I've been sticking with 9.10 because it seems like it runs a little better with the intel video card in my mini. (also the new notifications look a little nicer now)

think I found an answer for the first problem https://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/slim … 00201.html . Looks like you need to use the root password for halt, since root doesn't have a password in #! by default you would need to set it for it to work.

hello ..

I use already Slim .. If you want to use commands ( halt , reboot , console ) , you need to set a password for 'root' user .. Maybe something like this :

sudo su
passwd

now , use command as login and root password  .. This works fine for me (r)

For openbox by default .. Simply create  ~/.xinitrc ( or .xsession if .xinitrc doesn't work ) :

#!/bin/sh

exec openbox-session

set the root password and shutdown now works properly. Tried users-admin and didn't have any issues but like I said I'm running karmic with openbox so it may be a #! specific thing. Also created the .xinitrc, but I'll wait till next reboot to see if that works. Thanks ADcomp
