Topic: [Solved] multiple boot sequences for a distro (newbie question)

Hi,

I have a general question: i have two uses of my netbook: at home, and during travel.
* at home, i like to have all features active
* when i travel i prefer to save energy, and therefore to have wifi, sd card reader, webcam disabled, web-related software not autostarting, some daemons like samba off too.

Is it possible to have two different boot menus in grub for the same #! distro, each of them loading the OS with the features i want ? How could this be achieved ?

thanks

no more proprietary OS at home, and still no printer smile

It should be possible if you install CrunchBang a second time. But since theyre separate installs, you woud have to config/update/maintain both (translation: work).

And remember to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst so you can give a slightly different name to each installation.

If installing a second OS then there must be a few distros less power hungry than Crunchbang? In my experience, and it could well be an issue with this machine, Crunchbang absolutely guzzles power. One of our other moderators ... ahem ... might have a suggestion.

How about adding another user?

I'm not sure how much power the sd card reader would draw if not used, but a second user would take care of this:

web-related software not autostarting, some daemons like samba off too

Does the wifi have a hardware switch?  If not, the second user could also turn off the wifi in autostart.sh.  There may be a way to turn off the sd card reader there also.  My webcam doesn't power up unless some software calls it, but I'm not sure about the power draw enabled vs. active.

A lot simpler than maintaining two installs, I would think.

I think wifi is the only battery killer listed here, but I'm not an expert.
