Topic: Make Broadband Connection the Automatic Default.

Just joined.

Using #! from the Linux Format magazines DVD, in  'Live DVD'  mode.

Tried to get an internet connection yesterday but could not get the my mobile broadband modem-transceiver recognised by #!, so I thought.
Had a bad night cursing Linux for being so out-of-date.
Tried again this morning, and after much searching found a tiny box "tick here for automatic connection".

That was an unreasonable amount of searching, and number of steps to do something so obvious.

I really do recommend that this box by ticked by default.

I cannot convey in words the difference in my mood now that I have #!
working.
Ticking the box made the internet connection work instantaneously.
It was so easy.

Now that anger has subsided, i like #!.
It is a fast OS.
Using MyYahoo! was much faster than with Windows.
It is also without all the tedious bloatware steps, going through the series of unwanted options that has becomes the customary grind to get started with other OSs.

Re: Make Broadband Connection the Automatic Default.

First:

This is something that gnome-network-manager doesn't tick.

For the developers:

You find the connect Files there:

/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Auto <Networkname>

[connection]
id=Auto <Networkname>
uuid=xxxxxxxxx
type=802-11-wireless
autoconnect=true
timestamp=0

The Line <autoconnect is possible...

Best Regards

Re: Make Broadband Connection the Automatic Default.

Is it possible to make a network automatically connect that hasn't been created yet?

For it to be "ticked by default" or for this "Autoconnect=true" line added, the network must already be created, which would take the #! developers out of the equation, right?

Re: Make Broadband Connection the Automatic Default.

I was really impressed with the simplicity of activating both my (Dell) wireless and ('3) mobile broadband on #!. For each it was only a matter of a couple of clicks - many thanks for the work on this aspect.
Excellent speed on both.

Re: Make Broadband Connection the Automatic Default.

Im trying to get NM working.
Ive added my wireless home network to the network connections box via the edit connections on the desktop icon.
Both wireless and wired have 'never' beside them, whatever that means?
Connect automatically is ticked in wireless settings.
Im picking up no wireless connections at all yet i know on my windows machine there is about 4 or 5 around the neighbourhood always visible including my own.
Theres a red box with a white cross next to the toolbar network icon that says 'No network connection' beside it.

I read the posts about Wicd and tried (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wicd) command but it says; E: Couldnt find package wicd
Probably because i dont have internet access yet, im not sure.

So i read this post below and thought i would try that.
Thinking maybe it needs autoconnect=true edited in the system-connections network file.
Which is named 'Home Network' which is what i called the entry in the NM wireless tab.
When i try and edit it, it says: "you dont not have the permissions necessary to open the file"
Do i need root access to edit it and how do i do that?
Thanks

Re: Make Broadband Connection the Automatic Default.

I guess you're using a laptop? It sounds like your wireless card isn't working. When you right-click on the red X, is "enable wireless" ticked? Is there such a line at all? if not, maybe you need some firmware for it, try connecting with LAN & google something like "wireless firmware <YOUR LAPTOP HERE>".

Mm, on second thought, did the installer fail to set-up the network for you? Or were you connected by LAN?
