Topic: mdadm vs btrfs on usb thumbdrives
well I had some spare time this afternoon so I ran a few tests on karmic with three 8gb sandisk cruzer thumbdrives I had laying around. I test transfer speed using IOzone, I don't know much about benchmarking yet so I don't know how relevent these tests really are but I can reproduce them some other time with a different benchmark if people want. So first I tested one drive fat32, then ext4, (forgot one drive btrfs) then two drives mdadm ext4, two drives btrfs, three drives mdadm ext4, three drives mdadm with btrfs, then three drives btrfs. here are the results in openoffice http://omploader.org/vMjdiaQ and to give you a preview here are graphs for the read and write(the other benchmarks vary in the results, I don't know what they all mean so someone with more benchmarking knowledge might interprit them better)
seems like the best all around is three drives with mdadm and ext4
too bad you can't mount it on windows, but it may be good for backup on a netbook. Oh all the arrays where raid0 also, since btrfs doesn't have raid5 yet I didn't bother checking and raid1 should be pretty similar to single drive results.
edit: heres another chart with all the results, a little hard to read though
