Topic: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

An interesting article here, not many surprises:
http://www.linux-mag.com/cache/7520/1.html
It dawdles at the beginning but then has some interesting memory usage comparisons.

Then he seems to trash Xfce based on the bad numbers for Xubuntu.

Last paragraph is:

If you use Ubuntu on old computers, the yet-to-be-released Lubuntu is the only sensible choice. In the meanwhile, you can get the same experience today by performing a “command-line system” install using the Ubuntu Alternate CD (press F4 at the boot menu) and then installing ...

I thought he was going to say Crunchbang! ... but he says: "the 'lxde' desktop package".

I thought installing LXDE wasn't that simple. Is it?

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

Oh it's simple enough to install LXDE with a command:

apt-get install lxde

Then choose whatever apps you like. My own mixture is minimal Ubuntu+LXDE, syanptic, wicd, codecs, cups, and favorite apps. Very lightweight, mind-bending speed.

It does not have the stark beauty of Crunchbang, but it provides the super-simple graphical desktop I need because I share the computer with several other people (mostly kids) who have only known Windblows or Mac. I wanted them to be able to use the computer without any "coaching" or whatever. I even change the names on the icons to reflect their function instead of the app's name. Firefox became "Browse the Web," Audacious became "Music Player," Abiword is renamed "Writer," etc. All have their icons right on a pretty customized desktop. I get frequent compliments on the incredible speed and ease of the old Dell Dinosaur. In fact it has helped me win a few of the dancers and their families over to Linux.

My laptop runs on Crunchbang (don't need the desktop at all) and has more resources than the old Dell desktop. Yet the old Dell with "Robin's Remix" (LXDE) runs quicker and more responsively than the much-newer Toshiba with Crunchbang.

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

We need to spread that article! Sadly, many people think Xubuntu = light-weight.

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

Very good article. I knew Xubuntu wasn't lightweight but I didn't know It was that bad.

Running Crunchbang on eee pc 701 and Dell Mini 10v.

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

But WHY? Xfce is Ligth weight and the apps are rather so

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

Xubuntu includes lots of Gnome stuff which nullifies the speed benefit of Xfce.

To that, I could ask WHY once more tongue

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

Has anyone tried the new Zenwalk 6.2? Downloading it now to do a test run.

I tried it on a virtual machine on my Mac and I had problems with it.  Unlike the previous version, this one at least installed, but its package manager was non-intuitive and didn't seem to be working at all when I tried to download applications.  I also didn't find it particularly fast, which it's supposed to be.  The only other Slackware-based distro I have played with is Vector, and I found it more intuitive than Zenwalk and had no problems with it other than not being able to get a package I needed.  My experience with both has lead me to stick with Debian/Ubuntu and derivatives until I have a lot of free time to really learn how to operate distros based on other Linux systems.  What I like about CrunchBang is it's different enough from Debian/Ubuntu to be interesting, it's leaner and more responsive, all the packages I need are available for it, and I haven't found it that difficult to figure out.  (And when I've had problems, this forum has come through for me!)  I would be interested in trying Lubuntu when it's released.

Okay, you convinced me. I'm installing LXDE right now. I tried the "LUbuntu" livecd, but soon realized it had no
install option and popped it right out. Now maybe I'll get an idea of what LXDE is like...

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

I've been wanting to try the minimal install of Ubuntu but can't seem to find the .iso.  Any idea where I might be able to find it?

Thanks.

Re: Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu comparison

Masonux is a ready-made minimal Ubuntu+LXDE remix that is very much like my own homebrew. Good implementation, good use of the network manager with the d.e. too. Worth a look!

LXDE and Crunchbang use the same openbox items. if you look in /usr/share/CrunchBang/openbox/ the only thing not there is rc.xml which holds keyboard shortcuts and other environmental settings. Here is mine, with a few very minor changes. You will want to copy these (menu.xml, autostart.sh, rc.xml) to ~/.config/openbox (in your home directory)
