Topic: Getting 'proper' figure for memory used

I've been investigating memory usage on a few distros lately - on Crunchbang I'm fine thanks to the conky readout and on most *buntu distros I've got System Monitor - these give me the same 'proper' figure - generally a couple hundred megabytes. I've tried to find a lighter way that will work on any distro but all those I've tried use a different measurement, indicating that most of my memory is being used. Those I've tried are:

free -m
vmstat
cat /proc/meminfo
top

Anyone got any suggestions for getting the 'proper' (ie lower) figures? I'd be interested in a light GUI app that had graphing too!

When you run "free -m", if you look at the line "-/+ buffers/cache" you will see your lower figure.

Believe it or not, I googled the crap out of the interwebz and in the end I found out by myself. Is it so hard to give me a real RAM usage? I will now leave Linux and go back to using my Abacus. You, the linux community have 24 hours to fix this or I will set off the bomb. You'll never find it in time.

I'm so meta, even this acronym
