Topic: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

In light of the activity in the thunar vs. pcmanfm thread, I wanted to start this one before the network-manager vs. Wicd debate hijacks it.

...and I vote 110% for Wicd. What a great app this is. I used to wait at least 45 seconds before my computer would connect with the gnome network manager. With Wicd, it's connected as soon as I boot up. It's great.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

I tend to agree. I've used wicd for a long time and many distros use it as their default. Network Manager has a few advantages though especially in terms of making 3G connections.

Overall though I think Network Manager is a sound default and it can be easily swapped for Wicd if that is your preference after install.

True! I forgot about network-manager handling other types of connection aside from wired/wireless, like 3G. Point 1 for team Omns.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

Prefer Network Manager. I like WICD because I can associate with a particular mac address -- network manager is so so promiscuous.

I don't like Wicd because it doesn't know about other types of networks and it seems like it can only connect to one network at a time. I like to share wireless via ethernet or gprs via wireless/ethernet and I haven't figured out how to do this with Wicd.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

+ 1 for Wicd lol

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

You have my vote for this too. Wicd rules!

I haven't used Wicd in quite a while, the last time I used it I couldn't connect to my wireless network in Ubuntu.

Running Crunchbang on eee pc 701 and Dell Mini 10v.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

i use wicd but only because i use slim so network manager insists on asking me for passwords.

shall we start a slim v gdm thread ?

Do you guys know there's a utility called 'apt-get' ?  You can install whatever you want.

We can also all install Ubuntu minimal and make our own #! remixes roll

The point of threads like these is to consider using different programs as the default choice.

Now THAT'S something I can't just do for myself as easily as I could switch network/file managers.  I'd love to see a #! with pacman and compatibility with Arch's repos smile

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

Don't know... i always used network manager. If it handles more connections types it would be wise to keep it as the deafault choice.

+1 for wicd

is it just me or does wicd feel unresponsive from time to time ?
It can only do one thing at a time...

but: +1 for wicd

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

Which one has more dependencies. I used to use wicd and then I moved and didn't get wireless work with it, so I ended up downloading network-manager with other computer and installing the (about 10) packages then from usb stick. So I'd say default the one which has more packages because then if you have to do it the way I did, you have less downloading.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

Considered Crunchbang is really shining on netbooks, wouldn't it be wise to keep the nm-applet for mobile broadband as default?

at home after I install wicd I have to edit the wireless-profiles config of wicd (dont't know where exacty it is stored, I'm currently not at CBL) and enter the ESSID manually. At school its no problem ..
perhaps that could do it. just a thought ...

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

Personally, I use wicd, but as qbrick mentions, #! is being used more and more on netbooks and/or laptops, making nm-applet a better choice.

Now while I know that people have mentioned adding a means to alter, add or remove apps during installation, what about a script that might simply do so post installation? It might be easier to code. If not, then we simply can modify our setup on our own. It's easy enough. But it wouldn't really be that difficult for some of the scriptmasters to actually whip something up either smile

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

Is a script really necessary for "sudo apt-get install wicd"? It even auto-removes network-manager if I remember correctly. smile

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

To backup the first reply, in my (limited) experience it's a lot easier to replace network manager with wicd than vice versa. Keep the status quo.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

I'm thinking network-manager. Its easy and the more minimal interface seems to fit better with #!. Status quo! Status quo!

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

I used to be a big fan of wicd and have suggested before here to use it as the default. These days I just leave network manager installed. It has improved dramatically over the last year or so and now has superior features to wicd already mentioned in this thread.

Unless I need to wicd to solve a hardware issue with nm I just leave the default the way it is on a new install. It doesn't get much easier than 'sudo apt-get install wicd' if you decide to use it at some stage down the track.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

I use both and have actually found both very responsive. The biggest advantage of NetworkManager , for me, is that I can also hook-up to USB networksand use it to connect via mobile phone. I can also run wired and wireless at the same time. To do this with WICD it takes a few additional steps and programs. GnomePPP will get me connected to USB via WICD.

I have one computer that connects automatically via NM and another that uses WICD and there is little difference in the time it takes.

The NM extras gives it my vote!
