Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

NM has my choice.

I'm running #! on a netbook, and I will agree that the extra features appeal to me.

Oh, and I'm a big believer in the old saying 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

For me NM works fine (I know it doesn't for some though), the only thing I don't like is the obtrusive 'Connection established' black window that appears every time I boot, but I can live with that.

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

I've had a problem with NM not connecting to wireless networks on two different laptops in both 8.10 and 9.04

It doesn't hold the wpa key. No matter how many times you change it, it keeps resetting to some default string.

I'm sure I've seen the same problem reported here once or twice.

Anyone who keeps a closer eye on the forums know how common this problem is?

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

I agree..wicd works much better and is alot faster. I have read in different forums people that have problems with nm-applet. I myself have an Atheros-wifi-card and nm-applet did not work at all...slooooow and unsecure.

Wicd is king!

Re: Replace network-manager with Wicd in 9.10.01

personally, i prefer wicd, i get a better signal and i think the interface is more intuitive. but omns makes a great point about netbooks and #!, i think the 3G aspect really makes network-manager the best choice for the distro.

+1 for wicd-  I've been using it for more than 2 years after it fixed issues I was having with ubuntu at that time.  I even put it on desktops, just for no other reason than consistency.   It's just personal preference, I admit.   If I ever put a 3G card in my netbook, now I'll know to get network-mangler back on it. wink

To backup the first reply, in my (limited) experience it's a lot easier to replace network manager with wicd than vice versa. Keep the status quo.

+1, yay!
And there are some people like me - living behind the moon big_smile - who can only use PPPoe to come online, and if I remember right wicd does not support Adsl or PPPoe. At least it didn't, when I gave it a try.

Nothing right in the left brain. Nothing left in the right brain.

+1 ... wicd rules, at least for my environment (WPA2 Wireless, Cable w/ DHCP)

The signal shouldn't be a result of which app you are using to configure the connection. The signal is affected by which driver you are using, if we are talking about software.
