Topic: [Resolved] Idea for new installer

I don't know how possible this is coding wise with whomever is working on #!, but I recently came up with a neat idea.

During install, perhaps a screen can be devoted to package choices. it may make the ISO a tiny bit larger, but shouldn't be cause for much alarm.

Have a screen that will let you choose between installing thunar, or pcmanfm, and then choose between nm-applet and wicd. The defaults can be kept as pcmanfm and nm-applet as they are now, but give some users the chance to get the other installed during regular install.

if anyone has anything to add, please do.

I think adding for thunar and wicd will not cause the ISO to become bloated as both are very small apps.

Sigs do it better

Re: [Resolved] Idea for new installer

Suggested in the other thread and many other times probably.

I'm not for it. Question is: how far do you take it? There's also the implication that it's a big deal. People might get hung up at install time wondering about the choices. A distro should have its personality and this is akin to schizophrenia. Above all, keep simple.

Re: [Resolved] Idea for new installer

#! uses Ubuntu's "ubiquity" installer. This functionality would have to be added "upstream" by the Ubuntu devs.

It's not as simple as you might think anyway... there would have to be two versions of the menu, two versions of the rc.xml, two versions of autostart... much better to simply do one thing right, and encourage users who want something different to "sudo apt-get install wicd" (for example).

yeah, you are right, i guess i didnt think far enough into it.

It could be done quite easily with the build-scripts, but I think Toolz hit the nail on the head with:

Also, this was kind of the idea behind the lite version of CrunchBang.
