Topic: default games

ok, so i can get that maybe #! is intended to be a no-frills lean-mean-productivity-machine type of OS.  I also know that a lot of games come with a lot of bloat with all their libraries and gnome or KDE dependencies BUT i think it would be absolutely awesome if #! came with some kind of game by default.

I would personally suggest something terminal-based like bastet or nethack or even moon-buggy.

i mean, with terminator you can listen to music, chat on #crunchbang, get your hacking done, and make the occasional move in nethack all in one window. it's a priceless experience.

Re: default games

I don't think a game should be included by default (even a term. based) . It is so easy to install a game that i don't think it is necessary...

Re: default games

it's such a small sacrifice in kb that the cool factor makes it worth it. just my opinion though.

Re: default games

i agree, your opinion is indeed uncool. just kidding.

Re: default games

no, i do not think games should be added. if one wants games, it is VERY easy to add. but the ratio of want to not want is not big enough for it to be default IMO

Sigs do it better

Re: default games

i suggest in another thread that playdeb repo should be included by default. That will help users easier to get more advanced games, as compared to arcade puzzle games in current repos.

Re: default games

For me, gaming ended when I quit playing CounterStrike, so for me no games by default are great; no bloat tongue

laptop: asus zenbook UX31 [debian wheezy, kernel 3.3.0-rc7-custom]
tablet: acer iconia a500 [honeycomb]
home: C2D E8500, 4GB RAM, 74GB Raptor HDD + 2.5TB in various HDD [debian squeeze, liquorix kernel]

Re: default games

i don't think adding the playdeb repo by default would be a good idea since a lot of those games come with a whole mess of dependencies and bloat that isn't on #! by default on purpose. playdeb is made for ubuntu and debian and assumes you're running on a gnome system. including the repo by default would be encouraging the bloating of your system. BUT nethack is about 1 megabyte installed and requires no extra dependencies. it wouldn't even have to be in the menus or anything. it would be like a juicy little easter egg.

Re: default games

as I see, those games have very few dependencies (and those dependencies are lightweight, less than 100kb usually, not depend on kde or gnome at all). Only the data package is heavy but that's just it.

I assume u r talking about gnome-games or kde-games kind of things (yes they always draw a whole gang of dependencies with em). The games on playdeb repo are different.

Re: default games

I don't see a problem with including a few of the cli games like nethack or angband, as long as there is space on the cd. Some of them are fun and they are pretty small, they also fit in with the #! philosophy in my mind.

I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.

Do you see the problem with that logic?

AnywaysI wouldn't mind seeing a game or two in CrunchBang.

Re: default games

I agree with anonymous.

Tho personally I'd like sgt-puzzles to get in. I install it anyways.

Re: default games

1. Tetris is good for relaxing and calming down (also for person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
2. Chess is a bless when you have a party. No one couldn't resist to play cool
3. Pipewalker - when you're on weddings, funerals, similar occasions..

What i wanted to say (and once again didn't say it right) was that it is too easy for someone to install a game if he/she wanted to , that it is not necessary to include it by default. But that is just my opinion.

It's easy to install most of the software that comes with CrunchBang. The default apps help define the character of a distro.  just fess up, you hate fun, smiles, and rainbows. wink

if you use emacs alt-x tetris, or theres vitetris

edit:
also if you have zsh installed look in
/usr/share/zsh/4.3.4/functions/Misc/tetris
and if you use screen
/usr/share/doc/screen/terminfo/tetris.c
it will need compiling first.

It it always debatable what should be included in a distro/OS.

Re: default games

I don't think it would be a bad idea to include some simpler versions of the solitaire games, like xmahjongg and the ace-of-penguins packages.  They're not as pretty as the gnome-games equivalents, but they work, and like it or not, just about everyone sometimes has time to kill when at their computer. roll

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: default games

i'm kinda in the "no games by default" choir too... but i'm not entirely opposed and closed off.

i'm not sure what games aught to be included.
surely none in lite version tho right?

freedriod-rpg anyone?
(oh how i love that game, and hope one day to be so competent n skilled as to be able to add to it's developement)

there are piles of games out there for linux, no one seems to know them all.
i was going to list a pile of useful links, but really, u can find em all with a search for linux+games.  would be great though if there was some definitive linux games wiki or something.

i used to have loads of easter eggs and games installed on an earlier install of crunchbang, and had them all set up on keyboard shortcuts.
here's a challenge for you folks in this thread...
dl and install crunchbang, start installing games and FILL the keyboard with shortcuts to games, and run remastersys before you make it too big to fit on a cd (or dvd if you think it impossible to fit on a cd enough games to fill the keyboard of shortcutts), et viola.  remastersys will have made the distribution for you.   if it's under a gig you can even upload it n then come post about your new "community games flavour" of crunchbang.  wink

Re: default games

Personally I'd rather not have any games on #! unless it's something like Arch Linux does with Space Invaders on the install CD.
