Topic: remastersys campaign

big_smile

this might be one of those dangerous world changing revolutionary ideas...

... lets promote remastersys at crunchbang.  smile
lets start up some built-into-the-website feature where crunchbang comunity members are invited to create their own flavours of crunchbang, and share them.

to name a few i know of, pclinuxos, susestudio, slitaz and slax, each have it made pretty clear that they've made headway into making "rolling your own distro" something as easy as installing your opperating system... roughly.  it's that easy in crunchbang too.  lets pimp it!   big_smile

think i'm jumping the gun?   another loon on a "if you build it they will come" dream?
....or is someone going to tell me this feature already exits, burried somewhere in "planet" or something?

anyways, i just had this idea while making a post in a thread about including default games... and i know i've made more than a couple pestersome posts asking uncle corenominal to include some of my faves....   so, uh... how about it philip?  can we get more of these fish beggers turned into fish farmers,?  wink
ooh, i like that analogy here. big_smile

what the heck would you call such a "share your own distro" section?   has to be a punchy one word-er of course.
...?

Re: remastersys campaign

Ambivalence.

I'm very much in favor of promoting remastersys!  It looks like a lot of us have started to think about repackaging our selections of packages.  There are even rumors about Canonical planning to make it harder for us to do so.

On the other hand, why should Corenominal's website have all the fun?  I say start a separate website - call it something like remastersys.org - where Ubuntu and Debian users of all stripes can upload their own ISOs.

Re: remastersys campaign

No way. Remastersys has their own website, forum, wiki, etc...

CrunchBang is an Ubuntu remix created using Remastersys among many other tools. Anyone should feel free to create their own Ubuntu remix and host it on their own site. I hope we don't see a bunch of "Crunchlets" like what happened to Puppy!

Re: remastersys campaign

For me CrunchBang is perfect the way it is. It provides a clean simple base system that can be easily customized, if desired. I strip out some of the gui apps and replace them with terminal apps. This is really easy with CrunchBang. It provides me with the perfect balance between gui and terminal apps. Trying to do this with one of the other Ubuntus is very time consuming. I also would not like to see a bunch of "Crunchlets".

Re: remastersys campaign

It is nice to be able to make an install CD based on your own setup, just in case you need to do a "clean install".

Re: remastersys campaign

#! is already pimped distro (ubuntu) smile

So building something over #! would be similar to car tuning of already pimped Mercedes AMG wink

Why don't you build your set up beginning with minimal-ubuntu or (even better arch) – this way, you will be able to see all the hard work (and a lot of thinking and time) that is put in #! release.

PS. What is so wrong in a large number of so called crunchlets?

I just think if we "forked" #! everytime someone apt-gets an application (WicdBang, CrunchNar, CrunchGame, AwesomeBang just to name some examples recently mentioned on these forums) it would be incredibly lame. "I made a new Crunchlet... TopBang... it is CrunchBang with the panel on the top instead of the bottom... please host my .iso for free so the whole world can use my awesome distro!!!"

If somebody made a VERY high-quality community remix that brought something innovative to the table (such as ADComp's work, or a really well-done Arch port) we might consider hosting it here. But again, if you have the skills to do that, why call it #!, why not make your own site and promote your own unique distro (as ADComp has done with MadBox).

I would prefer, if someone has a brilliant idea for a particular improvement, that we discuss it here on the forums and suggest that Philip include it in the next release. Make #! better instead of hosting amateur remixes. "Try new HannaMontanaBang, it's #! with a pink theme and Miley Cyrus wallpaper!" It is a slippery slope you see. smile

Re: remastersys campaign

yes, i agree with snowpine. apt-getting is not a big deal, and not really worth an own 'distro'. it would be more interesting to provide scripts and/or config-files in a little archive which can be pulled over an existing (clean) installation of #!
or a spin-off, a new base on which #! is built (for example on Arch or even on debian sid) would be great. i remember this was discussed in the forum a few weeks ago.
