Topic: Pidgin PPA

Hi all,

is it possible to include the official pidgin-developers ppa into one of the next #! releases and keep pidgin out of the other pre-installed packages? This would help to have the latest version installed.
The avarage ubuntu-user can upgrade pidgin via this official ppa hence I think this should be a problem with the #! packages.

Below my problem in detail:
I tried to update pidgin yesterday via the official pidgin ppa and it was not possible due to conflicts between some other package sources.
I had 3 different pidgin versions available (apt-cache show pidgin) from 3 different sources (one of them was the newly manually added ppa by the pidgin developers).

Anyway I was not able to upgrade 2.5.5 to 2.6.x because apt said that I already have the newest version.
I checked out all packages in the package manager except the pidgin ppa and still there were conflicts.
I had to force apt (sudo apt-get -t jaunty install --no-install-recommends pidgin) to install the newest package.

Comments appreciated.

Did you try just removing the old pidgin before installing the new one?

sudo apt-get purge pidgin
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install pidgin

No, I did not.
But using normal ubuntu it is not necessary to remove the old version, so I think it could be a problem of the #! packages...I think, not sure about it.

alright, but where else do I have the 3 versions from?
I only have the ubuntu, the #! and this pidgin-ppa installed...and the only one I've manually added was the ppa.
over all a fresh and clean alternative installation of #!-lite.

I know one will be from the PPA and another from the Ubuntu repositories.

and my only idea was that one of them comes with the #! repo.

1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8 was the original version thats in Ubuntu's repository [Main] and 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu8.4 is a security update [Security].

Sometimes after an update you just gotta sudo apt-get autoremove.  I think the problem is more with apt/synaptic than with the repositories.

But in general, would it be possible to have the pidgin-ppa installed instead of the pidgin version out of the ubuntu-repos by default?
