Topic: Fonts too big

I have a situation with #! on one of my virtual machines where the text is very large on Conky, openOffice top menus and other places, yet the configuration files indicate it should only be 8 point.  I don't know how it happened or what I did to make it so, but I have seen this before in a Debian Lenny virtual machine.  Has anyone else run into this problem?  How can I fix it; the large text is annoying.

Re: Fonts too big

it is likely that the DPI settings are wrong and/or the DCC sends wrong information about the hardware to the system. Take a look here:

Nothing right in the left brain. Nothing left in the right brain.

Re: Fonts too big

I don't think that was it, as the xdpyinfo | grep resolution command gave me 96 x96.  In this case, I went to a different Mac where #! was set up under VirtualBox.  Font size is correct in Conky and gnumeric, but the font size was huge in the menu and other  horizontal menubars above the document window in openoffice programs (installed through Synaptic). Is there some special way to change their size?

Re: Fonts too big

What about the output for "xdpyinfo | grep dimension"?

Re: Fonts too big

xdpyinfo | grep dimension
  dimensions:    1368x912 pixels (361x241 millimeters)

I should add that the big fonts do not appear in AbiWord or Gnumeric, making me think that the problem is specific to openoffice; although that doesn't explain the big-fonted Conky on my other Mac.

Re: Fonts too big

I have just installed Slater Alpha 2, and had a very large font issue after a reboot. Concky, Terminator and gedit all huge.

I have set each program to be smaller fonts one by one, boring I know!!!, and it's pretty pointless because it's not solving the underlying issue, but it is making the desktop look OK wink

The most strange place where the font is huge is the log on screen. The log on screen itself looks fine, but when I type in my user name the font doesn't fit in the box. I just thought I'd mention that in case it's a clue for someone who has an idea what's going on.

Thanks
Steve

PS #! getting better and better all the time
PPS I was so happy to see the install dropbox menu item, well done and thanks for that.

Re: Fonts too big

@stelil - First, please don't bump old threads. Secondly since this thread mentions DPI, have you tried changing it?

Re: Fonts too big

Sorry, as you can see I'm on my 3rd post ever, not that that's an excuse, I'll revisit the FAQ's and find out what bumping an old post is. I just assumed if I found a thread without a conclusion, that sounded like my problem, that was a good place to start.

Thanks for the link however it did the trick for most things,  I created a .Xdefaults and added a line to .config/openbox/autostart.sh as suggested.

Thanks
Steve
