Topic: Replace File-roller with Peazip in 9.10

Hi all!
Last week a friend of mine tried kubuntu 9.10 and he wanted something like 7zip for his fresh install of kubuntu. He needed ton decompress some rar files, and even after installing the unrar package Ark couldn't get the work done.
So I told him to install peazip and it workd like a charm. I tried it myself and I think it could be nice to have it pre-installed on future crunchbang versions. Here are some interesting features:

Main features

PeaZip is an open source file and archive manager: cross platform, available as portable and installable software for 32 and 64 bit Windows (9x, 2k, XP, Vista) and Linux (PeaZip is a desktop neutral application).

    * Read only (browse, extract, test)

Free as in freedom
PeaZip is freeware, free of charge for any use, and is also free as in freedom since it's Open Source (LGPLv3)

It's also really lightweight and fast and you don't need to add other packages (like p7zip, unrar, etc) and comes in both 32 bits version and 64 bits.

Re: Replace File-roller with Peazip in 9.10

is there something out there that would fully support all those in the read-only list there?    or at least a few more of them.  ...lzma is really the one that stands out as one i'd want in an ideal zipper app.

"custom" does sound curious though... wink

I don't understand what you mean...you suggesting "lzma" instead? I don't know this app, could you elaborate? (i googled it, they say it's the compression algorith used in 7zip...)

Re: Replace File-roller with Peazip in 9.10

I think Digit just wants a compression utility that offers read and write support for more formats including LZMA.

Re: Replace File-roller with Peazip in 9.10

Ok I understand now. Honestly speaking I don't think having write support for lzma is necessary since it's not commonly used (but perhaps I'm wrong I don't know this format...)
Does File-Roller support it?

probably used by slackware.. methink

Re: Replace File-roller with Peazip in 9.10

I use Xarchiver… I uninstalled file-roller… I don't know if peazip is better than xarchiver or file-roller, but I think xarchiver is lightweight and efficient enough for my usage.
