Topic: WICD vs. Network Manager - Confused

Hello all, first let me say that I enjoy using Crunchbang 9.04 [32-bit] on my Dell D600 Laptop.
This distro is amazing.  I've been using Linux for 6 years or so, and have been using Wicd.

As of a few days ago, I moved house, and I now connect to a different router/network for Wifi.
When I tried to connect to the new network, iwconfig found the details of the network,
and Wicd found the network ESSID by name BUT WiCD could not connect.

In the matter of trying a few things, I used ifdown eth1 to bring things down,
and ifup eth1 to do the reverse. No change. WiCD still does not obtain IP address.

Then, right-clicking - and choosing -> System "Network Manager" opens the
Network manager GUI and there I find it has the old network details in there even though
that router is far, far out of range (the router has been boxed and stored LOL).

I then disabled the Wireless profile in Network Manager GUI. Then, I enabled the Wireless profile with the new details
and then the machine finds an IP address and connects, seemingly without WiCD making the connection.

The magic happened as soon as Network Manager knew of the ESSID I wanted to connect to.

Now, here's the confusion (sorry for the pre-amble/ramble above).

According to http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … k-manager/
the install process of WiCD removes (via apt) Network Manager from the system.
Looks like that didn't happen as I was able to use the Network Manager GUI to connect when Wicd could not.

I was under the impression that when wicd-client is running in Openbox, then THAT is the spot by which
to make connection decisions.

I'm not sure if it's something in WiCD or if there is another step needed to fully flush out the Network Manager GUI.
It's also hard to say if this is something I would really want to happen anyway, as Network Manager GUI (in this case)
saved the day and allowed me to connect.  Perhaps there is a conflict in the system and ... (thinking out loud)...
...when Wicd and Network Manager GUI are on the same page, a connection will occur.

If this is the case, it would require a user to constantly configure/reconfigure 2 software apps
to perform a role that should be handled by one app.  Configuring 2 apps with identical details
will quickly become a hassle when going from one wifi hotspot to another.

Any thoughts/ideas?
Thanks. Adam

Re: WICD vs. Network Manager - Confused

I have the same type of problem, as well. The university I go to has wireless available in the classrooms and in university buildings. For some reason Wicd will recognize any other wireless connection (I don't know yet if it will connect...haven't had the opportunity) but it Does Not See that the university wireless exists. I pull it up when I know I'm in range, someone right next to me is using it, but it doesn't show up on my computer. If anyone knows about what this could be, I would also be very grateful.

PS. adamt222, I'm sorry I couldn't help you out.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
