Topic: SOLVED Help with gksudo synaptic and sudo dpkg --configure -a

Hi all

I'm impressed with crunchbang so far, but I'm having a little trouble using the synaptic package manager.

I am running it with the gksudo command but I get this error message. If I run it with out gksudo I don't have the privileges to install anything.

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I'm newish to linux but have done a year of banging my head against the wall with mythbuntu.

I hope this makes sense and someone can help me out.

Cheers
Andrew

That error occurs when an installation was corrupted/interrupted. Open a terminal and run sudo dpkg -- configure -a and you should be okay. Afterwards, you should be able to open synaptic with gksudo.

Many thanks for the reply,

When I copy and paste         sudo dpkg --configure -a         into a terminal or the f2 run command window I just get this again.  I don't add any spaces just start the copy at s and finish at a.

Maybe sudo apt-get -f install?

Thanks for the help.
I couldn't get it to work so I installed crunchbag lite and it's all working fine.

Hey guys,

I'm having precisely the same issue. I've tried all the suggestions here but nothing is working.
'sudo dpkg --configure -a' always hangs at the line "run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms".
I'd really rather not do a fresh install. Do you have any other suggestions?

Re: SOLVED Help with gksudo synaptic and sudo dpkg --configure -a

I was wondering why this thread was SOLVED, it didn't seem to be, more like abandoned. And the reason I came here was because I was having the same problem due to a corrupted download, so I was really hoping for an answer. I've seen the same problem in various forums and no working solutions, and I haven't used a linux installation for more than a couple of days, ever. Very frustrating.

So I just wanted to add, somewhat belatedly, that TRAILPUPS suggestion, sudo apt-get -f install, worked perfectly first time. I was then able to restart the download that wouldn't work because there was a half-stuck earlier version of the same package. Thanks a lot, and I hope others will come here and get your solution now.

I have absolutely no idea what I just did, of course, but heck, it works, so I'll go with the wind.
