Topic: Text Editors Megathread

Which is the best, and why? Which one should replace another? Which one do you use daily? Which one should be completely removed from #!CRUNCHBANG LINUX? Which one should be the default editor?

Post your answers here.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

The best
GEdit, of course. Because of its plugins, syntax highlighting, auto-indent feature and so on.

Replacements
VIM should replace GVIM. Even if VIM is more basic, it's still better than GVIM. About ten times better.

Used daily
GEdit and Leafpad.

Completely removed
GVIM. Because it's a stupid alternative to VIM.

Default
GEdit it's Ok for being the default one.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

I like Geany, but between Gedit and Leafpad Id probably choose Gedit.

One and only: SciTE. Powerful, simply, endless configurable, RTF copy-paste, folding, ..
All others freely can be removed if you ask me..

Regards!

Re: Text Editors Megathread

personally I use geany and vim the most. Gedit does have some nice plugins too though.

I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

I use Geany or nano, depending on the task at hand.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

vim for console.

medit for gui. (i only use a gui when editing multiple files at which time a tabbed editor RULES... i don't see too many people using medit these days but it works well and is allot lighter that gedit while havimg most of the same functions.)

Re: Text Editors Megathread

I tend to use Vim when working on the console or in a terminal, but I sometimes also use nano, I guess it depends on my mood. Otherwise I tend to use gedit because it just works. smile

Re: Text Editors Megathread

I use emacs-snapshot-gtk or nano…

Re: Text Editors Megathread

Gedit
The only downsides of it are slow startup and GNOME dependencies. But since I use it quite often and like it's features like coloring syntax and tabs management, I left it my only text editor outside of console. Also, it's Oblivion color scheme rocks smile

Re: Text Editors Megathread

i use geany or emacs.

im not too worried by the default editors, afterall i just remove what i don't want straight away, leafpad is nice for certain things, but i just set up a geany config that turns everything off but text editing off that does basically the same thing.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

I did use gedit for a long time, but recently I've been looking into building a system up from either base Debian or Ubuntu and tried geany. It's nice...I think I could get used to it. The only real difference as far as I'm concerned is that it's more cluttered...but I'm sure the interface can be cleaned up. So Geany, I guess! smile (But I'm still using gedit)...

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

I use Nano on the command line and Gedit for my daily text editor.

Re: Text Editors Megathread

nano is the only real text editor that's been discussed here, all the other ones brought up just wish they were nano wink

Re: Text Editors Megathread

Geany most of the time, I tried SciTE for a while but i can't get my setting to stick (like using a monospace font, i check that option then on next boot up its unchecked)
If i can't use geany, i use Gedit.

just call me...
