I thought this would be the best thread, I added instructions for a USB install from Windows, as Unetbootin doesn't work. Feel free to PM me for errors, and to fill in anything I may have missed.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!
I don't have a Linux box handy to create an installer and this saved me a bunch of juggling with live versions and USB drives.
Imho the best distro out there. Very stable, everything works and bloody fast too. Awesome work!
I've done a search so the usual apology if I've somehow missed it...
I read on a Debian forum that the standard kernel isn't optimised for the desktop, and that speeds of various things can be increased with a few tweaks. Is the kernel as used in Crunchbang tweaked for optimal desktop performance? If not, why not? (<--not having a go, just curious).
Also, what does anyone think of Preload (adaptive readahead daemon)? I installed it and it seems that gimp fires up quicker, although I've not noticed a change in the Firefox loading speed. Perhaps I've not given it long enough. It's in the (9.04) repo's, should anyone be interested.
Another question: how secure is Crunchbang straight out of the box? Imagine a new Linux user that doesn't install any extra security software nor enable a firewall-how safe is that user? (This is a question of Linux, in general, rather than Crunchbang-specific)

Afaik CrunchBang uses the default Debian kernels.
Afaik CrunchBang uses the default Debian kernels.
And i wouldn't bother since debian does a great job in kernel cleanup/security (as many reviews shown)
So, if is great why bother ![]()

Well first what do you consider "safe"? And "safe" from what?
There is very little malware for Linux and most Linux distro's setup a user as default thus limiting the damage malware can do anyways. As for a firewall, its not needed unless you have a service or program that will be listening on a port.
If you want more security you can just setup iptables, setup SELinux, etc.

or, if you're not used to iptables, you can use GUFW ;-)

I have played with the Xfce version and love it's speed! It has a few issues right now with sound (critical for a dancer!) and stuff... and it just strikes me funny that Xfce is configured to look and act just like Openbox. My first thought was, "If I wanted Openbox, I'd just get the Openbox version. This is Xfce and it's just like the other (except for the icons in the menu and stuff)." But I think I'm changing my mind about that. Crunchbang shows how lightweight Xfce can be when it's done right!
I'm curious about one other thing... I had tried LXDE on top of my old Crunchbang 8.10, and again on minimal jaunty, but it was buggy as can be. I'm curious if anyone has tried LXDE on top of the Openbox version and if it's still buggy. At first thought, because LXDE uses Openbox as it's window manager, you'd think they would be completely compatible. maybe they are on Debian, but in all the 'buntus it was buggy. I mean show-stopping buggy. I call it "the Buntu Bug" because LXDE works fine in other distros. Perhaps I'll start a new thread on the subject if no one who reads this one has tried it.
Trying to contain my zeal for the final release,
Robin

Safe from the everyday nasties that prowl the net. I know people say that "Linux doesn't get viruses/virii" but there is other malware out there but I wasn't sure how susceptible a standard Linux install was to them.
I know about iptables and SELinux but I tend to just use GUFW. Thanks, anon and mtg. ![]()
Back on topic, I tried to install CBX but various things didn't work for me so I'm back on 9.04. Not that I'm too fussed; 9.04 is fine as it is. ![]()
Note: I couldn't say what the problems were, they varied. Sometimes, it was graphics; sometimes , it wouldn't boot; sometimes, it wouldn't even get past the POST screen.
brilliant job, thanks Corenominal!
Live cd is great, as all previous crunchbangs
I somehow screwed up the dd thing to create a bootable USB stick so I ended up burning a cd, i don't understand what I did wrong, I will find out one day...
wanted to wait until beta, but i couldn't resist, tried to install on Vasiliy our beloved pentium 4 but there is something wrong with the keyboard, ex110 logitech, wireless keyboard, working fine in the live environment, but no possibility to change any setting/choice during install.
guess I will have to borrow a corded one form work tomorrow
let you know

I downloaded all 3 of my #!Crunchbang Statler installs via Torrent
I found #! Openbox x64 and #!Xfce x64 and #!Openbox x32 at http://linuxtracker.org/ . . . and they were well seeded.
You might also, look in http://www.tuxdistro.com/ they had some #!
I always download my various Linux Distros as Torrent files.
"Statler" looks, feels and work well for me. The only issues so far is that iceweasel hangs and so does xfburn too. Have installed the OB version and added the xfce through synaptic after, wanted to check it out and it also looks very good. This looks like it will be the best of #! releases so far. BangOn#!

Try swiftweasel, with pango disabled ;-) http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic p-firefox/
I have been using Opera. No issues.

I am with you on the matter of xfburn hanging, had to bloat the install with K3b but it's worth it. Iceweasel too has issues, but i have not experienced hanging.
Thanks for the ideas guys, will try with Brasero or K3b, and I will probably end up with trying some other browser, but I will check that pango thing first.
@grndplane: Another sold-out Opera user here...I only use Firefox or its variants when a site absolutely refuses to act in a civilized manner (3-4 times a year).
BTW (and I humbly beg forgiveness if I'm off-topic here), I finally got Statler installed on my asus eeepc 1005PEB using the "dd" method rather than unetbootin. All I can say for now is WOW. Corenominal, you've done it again!
Anyway, I'm tweaked up enough (tint2, conky, brightness adjust, gksu gdmsetup to get rid of the entry login, etc) to want to iso it in case (read "when") I wade in too deep and bork it.
I've read that remastersys is ubuntu only, yes? Any alternatives for debian? My preferred backup mode is to blow an iso every week or so...

Remastersys is for both Debian and *buntu
Remastersys is for both Debian and *buntu
Praise be, that's what worried me, i just couldn't get to know how to use Clonezilla.
@Zwopper: Thanks for the pointer! Have you tried remastersys for debian? Did you follow these instructions beforehand?
"You should install squashfs-modules for your kernel and either aufs-modules or unionfs-modules before you install remastersys."
Not sure if this is necessary (or how to do it)...that page looked old to me and I wonder if it's for earlier versions....
Any help appreciated.
