Damn! Just saw this post. Ok *sigh* I'll go and dig out those old-fashioned Cat5 cables that my grandpa used to use to connect to his wooden router  big_smile

PS. download speed was awesome. Got the i686 OB iso in 15 minutes, way to go with the new servers!!

Just installed nvidia following that tutorial. Install worked fine - but now boot time from grub to conky is up from 24 to about 50 seconds.  Must be something wrong...

EDIT: Correction: After 3 reboots, boot time is back to normal with just the  few seconds delay, i also experienced on other distros, when having installed the nvidia-drivers. smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

I try it with Unetbootin on my Laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens 2528xi) : after a fast fast fast boot = all seems to work great. Very fast for distro on an Live-USB !!! big_smile

Not an Alpha for me, more a RC, no ? tongue

When the RC go on, it quickly going to be the primary OS on my Laptop !

Next, I wil try it on my EeePC Asus 1101HA smile

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Been playing with Statler since I got home from work an hour ago.

So far, I've only been able to run it in live-usb mode.

I tried Corenominal's wiki link ( http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/statler … stallation ), but couldn't get the install process started. Then tried unetbootin with cdrom-detect/try-usb=true, like iggykoopa suggested, and ran into the same problem he did.

My wireless also doesn't work (Broadcrap sucks!!) in live-usb mode, but that's expected. I got it to work with my current SiduxBang installation, so I'm pretty sure there's a way to make it work on a fully installed setup.

Other than that, everything seemed to work fine (flash, sound).

Awesome work, Corenominal.

Hey! Glad it worked for you smile

While putting Tota together, we worked our way through a few of the Debian Squeeze specific problems. I will make sure that the relevant Howto's from Tota are posted here at Crunchbang just in case anybody comes up against a problem ie. Nvidia drivers. I need to check that they also work on my CB Alpha install first though. I have noticed a few differences between CB Squeeze and Tota Squeeze.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Got both iso's last night,,Cant wait to try them out.

I think ill play around in virtual box first to see how they both go and to get familiar
with the text installer,,,When i do decide to install one on my drive i hope it pics up my wireless
card or broadband card,,This would make things alot easier.

One more thing,,I noticed #! on Distro and there still using the old description saying its Ubuntu based.

@corenominal:
Might be good to put a warning on the USB wiki noting that this method deletes all contents of the USB. (which might sound obvious for someone familiar with dd, but rather surprising for someone used to unetbootin...)

Just wanted to add;

@Corenominal
I like that you've made the stock keybindings similar to the old Lite version. Will save me a lot of time editing the rc.xml (if I managed to install it), since I'd purge heavier stuff like Gimp, Open Office ..etc (I'm a netbook user)

486 Openbox version should be downloaded in 25mins, but I don't think I'm gonna get the chance to test it till later on.

And in case you didn't guess, yes, I'm getting the 486 version to try and make it run on that old Cyrix machine! tongue

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

just installed the version on my USB drive, and booted live, was having issues installing from the USB, kept asking me for CD drivers, anyway currently typing from crunchbang 10 openbox. It works perfectly so far, the new wireless drivers for my netbook are giving me 100% network connection, where on any other distro it only works at about 60%, so major improvement there. Also after boot up it only uses 58MB of RAM even better than the last crunchbang.

i am running a Samsung NC10 netbook and for anyone out there that wants to know.

felt compelled to sign up and acknowledge my stupor at how well the alpha works...

thanks for the great OS

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

I've tried live session (openbox i686) on virtualbox, here my first thoughts about it:

Overall impression... excellent... congratulations corenominal, you did it again dude!

What i liked the most:
* Nice theme, overall look.
* Nice to see at iceweasel first run page the statler muppet image, first time i've seen it in the forums so far, i've seen gonzo and others... this is statler edition... let's give some respect to the old guy... tongue

Suggestions:
* Boot menu: try more self explanatory titles like default install, expert install and avoid the word text if not gonna be a graphical one. And the auto option isn't explained, not even in the help text.
* Why not wicd instead of network manager?
* I like the default wallpaper... but the "#! crunchbang linux" text need to be vertically centered against the debian logo... may be i'm just blind.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Have anybody had any troubles installing this alpha?
I tried it via unetbootin (no problems doing so) and was wondering if to install it over 9.04 or at least to wait for a beta, as I use #! regularly and even if there are not many crunch-bang-related things to be broken (mostly debian tongue ) I could face hard times dealing with them.
And another question - is statler installing grub2 (I saw it at the statler's repo)?

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Amazing, a new version of my fav distro, now based on Debian! Thanks!

Edit: I had almost lost hope of seeing distro updates after 9.04, but this post brought me back at this site tongue

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

@ bozhkov

It worked for me, but it's an alpha - if you need to use it regularly, I'd wait for a beta (or even better the final version) if I were you. Ubuntu 10 alpha was a nightmare on my laptop...

Edit: about Grub 2, usually the first thing I do after installing a distro is revert back to Grub legacy... IMO it's faster.

It uses grub2.

Doesn't the Expert install let you pick grub legacy?

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Yes, the ubuntu's betas and alphas are nightmare because basically they're messing with everything and usually it ends up badly, but here we have debian squeeze with corenominal's touch and as I have experience with debian testing of around two and a half years, I think it's way more stable now as a beta than an ubuntu non-LTS release. smile But yet, I'll way for a beta maybe to get informed from our brave testers about the statler adventure. smile

edit: @anonymous - yeep, I totaly forgot about the availability of expert install, debian-installer after all big_smile I dislike it back in my pure-debian days because then grub used to start the kernel without the quiet option by default.

Nope, I've just installed Statler via expert install and it doesn't.
