Topic: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

My main laptop had a triple-boot with Ubuntu Intrepid, CrunchBang 8.10.01, and <cough> WinXP and all were working well (if you can say WinXP works 'well;' I keep it around for one silly app.)

As I've been using CrunchBang more than the others so I decided to revamp things yesterday and removed Ubuntu, repartitioned, and reinstalled CrunchBang using the new 8.10.02.  I did this after evaluating the live CD on the laptop.  I didn't worry about having a Net connection; I was simply looking at the new programs and the order of things.

So, after the install, I couldn't get CrunchBang to connect to my network via wired or wireless connection.  Network Manager doesn't throw up any errors, it just churns on the WPA key and eventually comes back and asks for my password again.  When I plug in the ethernet cable, it won't connect either.

Wireless
Interestingly, if I boot into WinXP, wireless connects with no issues.  In CrunchBang, NM sees the wireless network and, when chosen, it comes back asking for the WPA key.  I am positive the key I'm providing is correct.  But when NM fails and requests the WPA key again, I can click on the 'show password' box and the password shown isn't what I pasted in.

Wired
In XP, I can shut off wireless, plug in the ethernet cable and it picks it up right away.  It just doesn't even show in CrunchBang at all.

The machine is an Inspiron 9300 and the specs are listed on page 3 of this post:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … em/page/3/

Networking isn't anything special and both are supported in the kernel now, I believe.
    * Network adapter
    * Wireless NIC Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG

Troubleshooting

  • I've checksummed the CD I'm using for the install.  I have no problems during the install at all.

  • I've rebooted the machine using the LiveCD while plugged into the ethernet cable - no connection.

  • I've verified the ethernet cable works on another machine and in WinXP on the same machine.

  • ifconfig shows just the eth0 and the lo

  • iwconfig shows eth0, lo and pan0

I'm kicking myself a little for being so hasty to install the newest version, but I'm quite sold on CrunchBang and would like to get it working.

Thankfully, this Inspiron isn't my main machine, so I'm quite willing to let it sit a bit, reinstall, or try an alternate install, but I'd certainly appreciate any guidance or help you folks can offer.

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

ive had some trouble with both ubuntu 8.10 and CB 8.10.01.. with connecting to wireless for the first time..i managed to get it up and running again, but dont remember exactly what i did..i think its just a confusing "usability issue"..
i think the ting is not to enter the password from the popup window, but go directly to the networksetup..:  from the network-icon on the taskbar->edit connections->wireless-tab->select+edit->enter ssid in wireless and fields in wireless security..
then connect through leftclick on the networkicon on the taskbar..
please try to remember how you did it if you succeed, as i failed to do so..

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

If all else fails, give wicd a try... quite a few of us on the forums are using wicd instead of network-manager. smile

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

Thanks for your responses.

papparonny:
I forgot to mention that I tried your idea and it still didn't work.  I'm a bit confused as to why each time I enter the WPA key, it looks fine until I save and reopen the connection.  Then, the key displayed doesn't match what I entered.  No amount of overtyping, copying and pasting, etcetera fixes it.

snowpine:
I'm also a wicd fan, but can't easily download it directly on this machine because I can't connect to either a wireless or wired network.  I could download a package and save it to a USB key, but shouldn't have to do that as the 8.10.01 worked well.  I'm concerned there's another issue.

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

sorry for not doing a good job explaining myself.. the popup box has a hashed output of your password, so you need to enter the password directly..(again..) i guess you did just as i stated first.. i had to go back n forth a few times before i did it "right"..

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

Thanks papparonny.  I've repeated this step tens of times.  I've tried just about everything I can think of.  I've even reinstalled.  I've tried deleting the connection, letting the card rediscover the connection and re-input the password, I've manually entered the info as you suggested.

I've installed Ubuntu Intrepid on this machine and never had issues. CrunchBang 8.10.01 didn't give issues either.

Still puzzled.  I'm actually re-downloading CrunchBang - this time directly instead of over Torrent and I'll reinstall again.  I don't think it should matter as the original CD checked out.  We'll see.

Hello sewmyheadon smile

Sorry to read you have been having issues with the .02 release, but thank you for the concise report to your problems. Have you checked your system logs for more information about what might be happening? Maybe you could post the relevant sections to the pastebin?

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

Happy to, Philip.  Can you tell me which logs/sections you'd like to see?

No problem, I am sure NM logs to /var/log/syslog. If you could attempt to connect like before, and if the connection attempt fails again, enter the following terminal command to capture the relevant entries.

tail -40 /var/log/syslog > ~/syslog-export.txt

Paste the contents of ~/syslog-export.txt and we can have a look. smile

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

I was just looking at the syslog when you posted.  Not sure I understand exactly what I'm seeing here with the changing states, or if you've got enough of the log for it to be helpful.

Here are the last 40 lines - let me know if you need more.

http://crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/84

Obviously, this part of the log pertains to my attempts to get a wireless connection, but I'm still not able to connect via wired network either.

I wondered if the length of my key could be an issue - it's 50 characters.  Hasn't been a problem with Ubuntu or Crunchbang before, but thought I'd mention it.  This would only be an issue with wireless, though.

I've just finished re-downloading #! from your site instead of torrent (md5 checks out on both), so I'm happy to reinstall and go from there.

Finally, I have no idea if this would be relevant, but the only partitions I kept intact when reinstalling were my 2GB swap and a 20GB /home.  In addition to this, I have two other partitions, which are both formatted upon install: 6GB allocated for / and another 2gb for /var.

*edit* When I say 'intact,' I mean I kept the partitions.  Beforehand, I manually deleted some folders, hidden and otherwise, that I wouldn't need or didn't want anymore.

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

I am also having this problem with the livecd -- I have not yet taken the plunge and installed.

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

I finished re-downloading #! 8.10.02 and checked the md5sum, and there were no issues.  Burned the ISO to a CD and booted the LiveCD in my laptop again with the ethernet cable plugged in and wireless on.

Still no luck.

I've pasted the entire syslog from my brief LiveCD session here:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/85

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

A little more info:

I rebooted my desktop machine to the CrunchBang LiveCD and it connected to the wired network with no problems.  I've unplugged the net cable from this PC and plugged it into the laptop, which will still not connect to the network via wireless or ethernet.

Rebooting the laptop into WinXP allows both the ethernet and wireless to work fine. Meh.

I'm puzzled.

kozimodo: what kind of machine is giving you trouble with the LiveCD?

Please could you provide more information about your set-up, it would help to narrow this down. smile

Hmm, as am I. I will continue to look for a reason why this is happening, or not as the case may be. Meanwhile please keep us updated. The only thing I can think of at the moment is that something went screwy with the last build and it is missing something. This could possibly of happened when the packages were removed from the build script and written into the new desktop metapackage. Hmm. I have been testing as many different network cards as possible, but they all seem to be working for me. Like I said, puzzling! hmm

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

Hey Philip,

I've just rebooted the same laptop PC with 8.10.01 and it recognizes both the ethernet cable and the wireless as well with absolutely no problem or hassle.

I'm quite sure it's not the PC or any of the hardware as most any distro I try works out of the box.  My guess is it has something to do with an either an error in the build, or something was accidentally removed.

Silly thing is, that I had no real reason except that nagging geek curiosity to install 8.10.02 instead of 8.10.01.  I suppose I could install .01 again and wait for an upgrade script, but I'll keep it as-is for now in order to help troubleshoot.

Please let me know what else I can do.  I'm sorry I'm not more help. smile

Would it help if I provide full sys logs for LiveCD boots of both .01 and .02?

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

hi sew smile
maybe you could post the outputs of lsmod, and possibly lspci and lshal?

sudo lsmod > mod.txt
sudo lspci > pci.txt
sudo lshal > hal.txt

im wondering if theres a kernel-module issue..

It is a fujitsu and has intel using the ipw2200 wireless module.  With 01, it did get a connection with networkmanager but for whatever reason, it was not stable so I installed wicd instead.  Never had any wireless problems with any version of ubuntu.

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

Thanks Ronny!

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

@kozimodo, thank you for posting the additional info, I am sure it will help smile

@papparonny, thank you for your assistance, it is appreciated!

@sewmyheadon, thank you for sticking with it. wink

I am sure if we all work together we can crack this. For what it is worth, here is a diff output from the .01 and .02 package manifest:

Part 1: http://crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/90
Part 2: http://crunchbanglinux.org/pastebin/91

Please feel free to jump up and down if you spot anything!

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

Ah, I see kozimodo and I have the same wireless card and similar experiences.  That's something, I suppose.

Thanks, Philip.  I'll carefully look through these diffs in a bit and let you know if I see anything.  Unfortunately, I may not know what is needed, so I'll just point out things I don't understand, or look funny.  Ex. crunchbang-datafiles 8.10.01 appears only on the left, but I may not know why it's changed, or what took its place.

Looks like .01's on the left and .02 on the right.

Interesting, and a big help. We are at least narrowing it down somewhat.

Thank you, I have been staring at it for a while, I think I have package names burned into my retinas. neutral The thing is, it maybe blindingly obvious, or maybe that something has changed in one of the packages since the two builds. Either way, good luck and let me know if you spot anything.

Sure is. smile

Re: [Resolved] No Network Connections on 8.10.02 Inspiron Notebook

corenominal: line 598 and possibly 597 in part1.. is that maybe a problem?..
i read that libnm-util0 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1.8.10.1 breaks network manager gnome less than 0.7, so it shouldnt be the problem here, but is it a naming issue between CB8.10.01 and CB8.10.02?
