Topic: [SOLVED]Devede

Hi, I have been using a lot of this great tool lately, converting old Hindi movie flvs and mpgs to DVD for my mom and wonder when it will be included in the Statler repos.:)

Also, i am thinking of installing an OS alongside Statler devoted just to multimedia. I came across this: http://www.junauza.com/2008/08/7-best-l … -for.html. Which would you recommend among these? Please bear in mind that i can just about make my way around with Mint(Ubuntu) and Crunchbang and have never tried any other linux. I wouldn't want any other installation to mess up my grub or anything.

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

I see devede in Synaptic.  Maybe it's in the Debian multimedia repos?

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

Nope, i have reloaded, marked all upgrades, upgraded, still no devede. Is there a deb that i need to add to the sources list? Sorry if i have misled by omitting to mention that i am on Statler xfce, i assumed that by now all crunchbang users will have switched to it. Still being amazed by, and delighting in it's speed and stability!:D

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

Ok. I've been for a while wanting to banish my windows partition with ConvertXtoDVD.

I need some good advice, how well does DeVeDe compare to ConvertXtoDVD in terms of video quality.

My TV is only 720p so I'm not talking state of the art HD video here. But retail DVD quality video is what I've come to expect from ConvertXtoDVD.

EDIT: Don't mean to try and steal your topic, mate. Just figured there's no point having two DeVeDe threads.

#! Statler on eeepc 1000H
#! Statler alpha 2 on eeepc 701

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

I don't about retail quality DVD, but the dvds that i have converted to have retained the quality of the original flvs and mpgs.

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

You should add
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org  squeeze main non-free
to your repo list.
Worked for me.

I think ConvertXtoDVD is much better than DeVeDe. More options, easier setup, better quality. The difference isn't big enough to keep windows installed though.

Cheers.

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

Thanks, got a  NO_PUBKEY 07DC563D1F41B907, used this:

$ gpg --keyserver keyring.debian.org --recv-key 1F41B907
$ gpg --armor --export 1F41B907 | sudo apt-key add -

and now my cup overflows!:)

AIUI, Statler is still an Alpha development release and should not be recomended as a primary OS for users with a single PC.

Some users, requiring a reliable and stable system, continue to use the standard Openbox Crunchbang!

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

I respectfully, and in good faith, say "bah!" to that, and to the unnecessary Disclaimer which helps corenominal "sleep better".:)

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

@mzsade: did you solve your problem or not? I don't understand your post exactly...

@zill: statler is very stable, didn't do any harm to my files/system.

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

But of course, you did! What do you think i am doing all this swaggering for?

Statler may well be very stable and may eventually become a rock-solid OS.  However, the fact that it has not yet done any harm to your system is not, IMHO, conclusive proof of this. wink

Alpha releases are an important part of Linux/FOSS and allow development to proceed rapidly in the "real" world.  However, I suggest that this is best done by users who know what to do if and when things break.  IMHO we should not encourage inexperienced users to install alpha software on a system they rely on.

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

I made my bones on Windows XP, (I will always hold Bill Gates in my  list of heroes, politics notwithstanding),
my ineptitude is not hidden here; i again assert from my experience as a lay person that, i encountered more problems as an inexperienced Windows user than as a fresh Linux user, and that this so called alpha has not yet done any harm to me even though i added an extraneous deb to the sources list. What exactly do you fear, that you would not be able to recover/view any of your partitions even with a Live CD, when everything else fails?

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

mzsade:  My comments were not specifically related to your abilities as you obviously have the confidence to successfully modify your system.  I was simply responding to your original comment that "...i assumed that by now all crunchbang users will have switched to it...".

Many users will find this thread via search engines and I do not believe we should give the impression that Statler is anything other than alpha development software.  This will change with time but is, AIUI, the current situation.

Linux OS's have a hard-earned reputation for stability and reliability.  However, this is only achieved following considerable testing and development with alpha versions, which are expected to break occasionally, or even frequently, possibly resulting in data corruption or loss!

While experienced users will always ensure that both their OS and data can be fully restored in the event of a crash, less experienced "newbies" may struggle with this concept. wink   We then have to try to pick up the pieces when they come back to the forums advising that they have lost their irreplaceable data!

And yet i aver, pointedly on the basis on my inexperience, and the not so improbable fact that anyone who uses a computer can boot from a live CD. move their data to wherever they please and have the sense to actually read the "read me"s...and the views of rash drivers like me.:lol

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

haha... i thought "and now my cup overflows!:)" was an expression meaning something like: i have to do a fresh install now, or worse big_smile:D:D

Pfff.... my english is so bad sometimes many times ever... hmm

How come i do not get to display the emoticons and just the symbols, even when i am grinning from ear to ear?

Re: [SOLVED]Devede

^ try putting a space between the emoticon and the letter before/after.
