Topic: Forum Suggestion/Request

I didn't find a forum/site specific thread/board so I thought i'd post here.

On my forums we have a karma/rep/thank-me button on each user's profile that can be clicked on to give users karma/rep/thank-me points.

The reason I like it, is because when somebody helps you, you can "thank them". Not sure about everybody else but I like to let people know when they've helped me.

Just a suggestion, and not sure if there is such a script/plugin for this forum script.

There is pun_karma:

So at least it is possible.

Re: Forum Suggestion/Request

I'd prefer we didn't have posts counts so I can't see myself being enthusiastic about this one.

Re: Forum Suggestion/Request

What's up with a simple "Thank you" in the thread?

You introduce something like that and a big part of the Crunch-community disappears. I can't find the words to properly explain but something is wrong when thanking someone turns into a matter of clicking on a button; we're anonymous enough.

Like omns, I disagree with the post count, but, I suspect, for different reasons:

for me, there are too many numbers in life, we don't need more.

omns is probably embarrassed about having such a high number!!!!   tongue tongue tongue

Re: Forum Suggestion/Request

+1 "Thank You" zengrapefruit big_smile

I dunno, I just thinks it's nice for somebody who puts a lot of time into support, when they see that members have thanked them. I know it's not important and there are loads of arguments against such a function.

Just a suggestion.

Maybe me being an install-junkie doesn't help. I like addons, scripts, plugins and features. Especially community related features.

Maybe there is a "hide post count" script as well, like the Ubuntu Forums "My Beans are Hidden". Although I think that Post Count says a lot about people to new members.

Although not a 100% correct example, if you get helped by somebody with a 3000+ post count, you are more likely to be receiving good advice than from a new user with a 20 post count. I know there are exceptions but a higher post count is likely to inspire more confidence.

This is why the karma/rep/thank-me button is also a good option. Constantly bad advice and trolling is likely to get you into minus- rep figures as opposed to plus+.

Anyway, as I said, just throwing around ideas.

Re: Forum Suggestion/Request

The way I see it: karma/reputation reflects quality and post count reflects quantity. Though admittingly a karma system can be abused hmm

Maybe me being a remove-junkie does not help either! big_smile Seriously though, it is a valid suggestion/request, but I am not sure that it really has any place on these forums. I agree with zengrapefruit, a simple thank you is more than enough. smile

Re: Forum Suggestion/Request

Another vote for a 'thank you' in the thread, more personal and only take a few seconds.

Slightly off topic ... my kids have their birthdays coming up & I still insist they write thank you notes and not send a thank you email! Am I a dinosaur??!!

Not at all. A meatspace note is far more personal and conveys more meaning, at least that is how I see it. smile

Re: Forum Suggestion/Request

I don't think people really weigh in post count when evaluating advice offered. More likely a username will register through repetition - repetitively providing quality advice. I reckon an avatar helps with this process too - I seem to be the first person posting here without one.

Note also that the only poster to ever ever get banned here made a big thing about post count ("... Spartans").

@richs-lxh: shame you chose the number 20 - there is currently a 'new user' with approximately that post count - from Germany I think - offering some great advice.

And then we have 'anonymous': over four thousand posts - a very low percentage of them lame platitudes in the introductions section or joking about in the off-topic threads - nearly always offering quality, well-written, polite posts.

@1002richards: absolutely! letters, no emails!

So there we go. Crunchbang style adult discussion and well thought out feedback smile

I agree, no Karma buttons needed,

"Thank You" everybody for taking the time to comment.
