Topic: Desktop icons do not appear in Xfce.

Hi, all.

I have #! Xfce installed and want my 'Recycle Bin' and 'Filesystem' to be visible as icons on the desktop.  I have 'ticked' the relevant boxes in the desktop settings, but they still don't appear. I also found this to be a problem when I used the #1 xfce liveCD.

Anyone found a way around this one?

Thanks,

Chris.

In the Icon tab of the Desktop settings you have tickled, give the the 'icon type' drop down a nudge and change it to 'File/Launcher icons' smile

Somewhat related...

Is it possible to add some kind of ignore-file in the home-directory so that I can choose which folders to show?

This http://xubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/08/04 … stem-menu/ may help, although it's more concerned with the menu, while this http://tillamookrage.blogspot.com/2007/ … icons.html seems to be more to the point.

EDIT -- added second link  hmm

This worked, but now I have too many options. In Xubuntu, the desktop settings asks which icons I want to display. I have 'Home', 'Filesystem', 'Wastebasket' and 'Removable devices'. I get the first three by default, and the fourth when I plug a USB storage device in.

When I tick exactly the same boxes on #!, I get the four I mentioned and links to /backup, /music, /usr...etc, etc.

I don't want these extra files, can they be excluded, somehow?

Many thanks,

Chris.

Please take a look at the second link in my post, just above.  It'll work.  wink

Re: Desktop icons do not appear in Xfce.

Hey, Zwopper.  This is too weird -- last week-end my desktop icons didn't work and I had everything splayed out from one side of my little screen to the other!  yikes  This morning I tried the fix I offered and it worked -- then after reading your post, which eric t also links to, I deleted the changes I'd made and it still works -- as it's supposed to.

It works -- that's all that really matters, right?  It's not so much how we get there as long as we get there.  wink  tongue

EDIT - no edit...

The xfdesktoprc part is obsolete.

Thanks, this works.

Now, how do I get my right-click menu to show the applications in the main menu, instead of as a child menu at the bottom?  I could care less about every other item in the menu, which is now garbage.

Edit:  Also, which file should I edit to add new application categories (e.g. Documentation)?

Re: Desktop icons do not appear in Xfce.

You can have the applications as the main menu or the desktop icons but not both.
