Topic: Latest Ubuntu

After reading several positive reviews on latest Ubuntu LTS version, I wonder if a Crunchbang version based on Ubuntu 10.04 would still  be a smart move. at leaset will we have a three year support from Caniocal company.

What do you think?

I think this thread will explain why it is unlikely. smile

I think the move to debian was good.

Re: Latest Ubuntu

There wasn't even a Karmic-#!, while Karmic itself was still acceptable, there where quite a few annoyances wich kept the devs from tinkering a Koalabang. But now, the annoyance goes deeper and deeper and deeper. Some programs like Pidgin didn't create a notification icon anymore (allready in Karmic), wich was okay under a GNOME environment with it's notification thingy, but not seeing the tray icon using Openbox and tint2 made me wanna... switch the distro big_smile

Interesting fact: The less "vanilla" the provided packages are, the more work I seem to have to make them do what I want. That's why Ubuntu made me nuts, Debian was nice and Arch is fast and stable. Yes, I had more work on Debian than on Arch to have a running system...

I guess this depends on how you are defining support. You would be able to update a CrunchBang Lucid for 3 years, but it would certainly not be supported by Canonical; afaik, Canonical only offer support for packages from their main repository, this does not include "universe" etc. and would definitely not include any CrunchBang modified packages. hmm

Regarding Lucid itself, I have heard some good things about it, but I have yet to give it  a proper run. I will have to take a look at it in more detail. smile

Another factor is this: A hypothetical CrunchBang 10.04 might have 3 years of support from Canonical, but would it have 3 years of support from Corenomial? smile

There is currently a CrunchBang 8.04 release that is based on Ubuntu LTS, so therefore hypothetically will be supported until April 2011. But as far as I know, few if any of us are still using it, and Corenomial is not actively supporting the #!-specific bits with bug fixes, updates, security patches, etc.

This is not meant as a criticism--far from it! Keeping in mind #! is a one-man show, I'm glad his time is spent working on the next release than supporting something he did 2-3 years ago.

Re: Latest Ubuntu

Hey what ever the deal maybe I like many other users of #! like support...it is as snowpipe suggested

Re: Latest Ubuntu

Though a Crunchbang user myself, I installed lucid 10.04 xubuntu on my daughter's n510 ion chipset 11" netbook. I just wouldn't hear of having cb statler or 9.04 installed on it. I suspect that the hardware config. is just too new.

Lucid installed perfectly and is behaving very well. It's reasonably fast and responsive, similar to what I am used to with cb. Although video playback from dvds is excellent, it is a little choppy on youtube and the bbc iplayer which is disappointing. I think I will need to install the nvidia drivers when I have a quiet moment. Otherwise what's the point of the ion chipset!

Re: Latest Ubuntu

^ Flash integration (especially on YouTube) is pretty bad on most recent versions of Ubuntu/Debian; I usually end up grabbing the videos I'm really interested in (I use Video DownloadHelper, but you can simply grab the cache files from the /tmp directory) and viewing them in Totem, VLC, what have you.

^ +1 - ran out of patience with YouTube support; installed Minitube and all is good...

Re: Latest Ubuntu

@discovery:Every Debian release is LTS due to their long life spans. So relax, you will be able to use Statler for a long long time.

#!, all else is but a shadow!

Re: Latest Ubuntu

And, in my opinion, debian support proved to be way better than canonical's smile Lenny is going to be supported for a full year after the release of Squeeze as  stable.

Bad in the sense of using excessive amounts of system resources, or in not working at all, crashing, freezing and the like? I'd agree on the first - the Firefox flash plugin keeps my cpu really busy - but I haven't yet run into a video that wouldn't play at all. Still, I'm not a major YouTube user I guess...

^ "Bad" in the sense that it uses a lot of system resources, but also in terms of choppy video playback.

In my experience, both Flash and Gstreamer playback get even worse (frame dropping) if you have PulseAudio installed, but I haven't allowed Pulse onto my netbook in nearly a year; PA may have improved since then.
