Topic: New Statler user

So I decided to give statler a try since everyone was looking so confident with an alpha release.

Booted the live cd and as usual everything loaded extremely fast, after playing around with iceweasel I decided it was time to install. Now, wheres the install button? I hope it will be possible to install from the live session once it reachs final.

Anyway, reboot, install, everything going great, until grub2 decided to give me the red screen. scary... Reboot again, install again, and everything else is a breeze.

It doesnt even look as an alpha build (though I have nothing to compare too).

Im only having trouble setting fusesmb to access my network. I can see the network from thunar but when I try to open a folder it. never loads. I doubt this has to do with statler itself because the same thing was happening in ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04.

tl,dr

Amazing alpha build, I love it. big_smile

Re: New Statler user

Hey raizenwolf, glad you made the switch.

I don't know if a livecd install is completely out of the question for Statler, or for debian-based #!, its just at the moment the debian live-based install is undergoing some heavy work, IIRC.
The text install though, really isn't scary. Its text sure, but its quite nicely laid out and friendly. It also saves up to a few minutes if you know you want to install, because you dont need to go through the whole live environment boot up.

In this case, #! isn't really alpha in the normal sense. It's not still actively developing a lot of its features. For example, an alpha build of software is maybe 75-80% complete, there are many major changes to make. In the case of #!, it's debian base (the majority of the system), while classified as 'testing', is already very stable, and might only see some minor updates or version changes between now and full #! release. So Statler is much more stable than a traditional alpha. Corenomial even hinted to the next build being beta, so its definitely pretty stable as is. Really, its the #! added stuff that would be the most unstable, and even then thats really a selection of apps, which again have already been developed (like Abiword for example), besides that, theres the actual #! stuff, the scripts and the setup. While a lot can still change from now till the final release, I don't think it'll ever be as crash-prone or buggy as traditional alphas or betas.

You may have to look around for a solution to your fusesmb problem, you can now search for 'debian' related problems, in addition to 'ubuntu' now that Statler is based of debian [whereas 9.04 and earlier, finding a fix for debian didn't always guarantee the same fix for #!, because of ubuntu's many edits]

Definitely watching the project closely though smile

Hey raizenwolf, glad you made the switch.

So am I. tongue

text install is not scary, its just thats a little annoying to reboot and select install since I was already there with the livecd on.

Yeah I noticed that after seeing how everyone was talking about the system and the change for debian, the comments were looking like a party lol

I will definitely look for a fix for the network, probably some settings on samba, I dont know.

on a side note; just had my first crash while watching a vimeo video. I blame my radeon 9600 that has poor support in linux sad
Should I install proprietary drivers or stick with the default ones?

yea, ~111 posts.. lol

@razienwolf, I'm not sure if your 9600 is even supported by the proprietary drivers (they stop support a lot of 'legacy' cards), if it is however, the proprietary drivers will probably be more reliable and perform better.

True, but thks big_smile
I had my time with crunch, then ubuntu, then windows again, then arch, then windows... and so it goes.

Turns out I forgot to update after install lol
Watched a couple flash videos with no problem, but just to be safe I installed the combo flash killer/block.
