Topic: Cooler with Sid

No -- I don't mean cooler like  cool  I mean cooler like conky's internal temperature reading.

It took a few days for me to notice because most of the time my desktop is covered by the screen(s) on this small device but since switching to the sid repositories it's noticable and it's consistent:  whereas prior to sid, prior to CrunchBang even, the internal temperature was invariably 54+ degrees C, which is good.*  It's now a fairly steady 52 degrees C.  That's not a significant reduction, but it's enough to impress me.  smile

So I have a question:  does your computer, regardless of what make or model run cooler with CrunchBang, or especially sid if that's what you've chosen.  I'd be interested to know if someone else, anyone else has noticed this.

*  [My device according to acpi isn't critical until 90 degrees C] and that's hot!  yikes

Re: Cooler with Sid

My netbook has actually been running cooler with Xubuntu 10.04 than it did with CrunchBang 9.04 or with CrunchBang Statler XFCE version. In fact, with a Debian base, it often got too hot to handle at some points and I had to shutdown for 20-30 minutes a few times a day. That, combined with never figuring out how to get wireless and external monitor resolution working correctly with Debian, has led me to use Xubuntu 10.04, though I've customized it to resemble Crunchbang XFCE quite a bit.

Re: Cooler with Sid

I have not tested sid yet, but I do agree that it seems like the newer versions of distro's have more power management options overall, and are more built with laptops in mind. Crunchbang 9.04 could be quite hot, and although I don't have real data, I believe Statler is less power consuming. Fedora and Ubuntu 9.10 are another bit less warm to me. I think the newer packages have better acpi support, but in the case of ubuntu (canonical) and fedora (red hat company I believe?) this could be caused by the money that powers the distro and the paid developers, that they can include better out of the box acpi support or something.

@Andreas

I like your signature quote, that's been my experience so far! I have kept my Debian partition so that I can mess with it from time to time, but as of now Ubuntu works for my netbook and Debian doesn't.

Re: Cooler with Sid

My eeepc 900 is coolest when I use SalixOS (on ubs-stick working as live-cd with saved data, some thing like puppy) - its temperature is more or less 52 oC.

Using all ubuntu familly (without eee-control ect) both 9.04, 9.10 and now 10.4 (madbox) it gets to 57-59oC.

With BSD - FreeBSD usually eeepc temp is about 56-57oC, but with DragonFlyBSD it is a bit cooler - 54-56oC.
Also I've seen an improvment after upgrading BIOs to v.1006 - fan set on&off at 54 oC, therefore eeepc is less noise.

Re: Cooler with Sid

My uptime at this moment is 4h 25m as per my conky and core temps are at a steady 46-47 oC, (incidentally, how does one get to write the degrees symbol?). I get very anxious when they go upto 59 oC max. while using devede.

Thanks for your comments, guys, I appreciate it.  smile

Re: Cooler with Sid

Debian squeeze crunchified, HDD t° 41°c after 4 hours
GPU T° (via nvidia settings) 58°c

looks normal? (laptop ASUS F5N)

@mzsade:  If the ° symbol is already in the web page I'm viewing, I just copy and paste. tongue  Otherwise, I copy & paste from here.  (I've never had any luck entering Unicode via keyboard, and the HTML code ° doesn't always work.)

My Mini (netbook, no fan) stabilizes at about 52°C with Statler Squeeze...with the heels propped up about 1cm from the desk on gum erasers.  It stays a lot cooler (44°C) if I keep the vents exposed to ventilation.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );
