Topic: lucid crunchbang

In my past linux use [before I switched to crunchbang 9.04 when it came out] I used opensuse with kde3.5 and I upgraded [opensuse 11 to 11.1 ect.] by not formatting home and my kde config. and most importantly the wine folder[with activated photoshop] would be in place after upgrade.
I consider my crunchbang 9.04 the fastest/best os I have ever used but it is coming to the end of support. I have tested statler[openbox 64b] and no auto log on [username/password every time "not fast"] no huludesktop, no 64b skype, no openshot movie editor and I would have to loose my wine folder.
What kind of mess would I make with a lucid minimal install without formatting home and loading openbox-desktop, tint2,pcmanfm, leafpad, volwheel and ? else. Is there instructions anywhere?
any help would be great-thanx

Re: lucid crunchbang

You can follow these instructions for doing the minimal Ubuntu install:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

Keeping your home partition should be fine, though I would follow this advice:

Re: lucid crunchbang

Hi Dove! Debian appears to be the future of the CrunchBang project, like it or not smile, so I would encourage you to learn more about Debian and solutions to your specific questions/concerns. For example, I am not a Wine user, but it seems extremely unlikely to me you can't copy your settings over.

That being said, if you want to continue using a "CrunchBang-esque" Ubuntu, your easiest option is probably to install Ubuntu using the Minimal CD, install Openbox and your favorite apps, and then copy the configuration files from a working CrunchBang install or a CrunchBang Live CD. Most of the stuff you need is in /home/dove/.config so just copy it over and tweak to your taste. I would also encourage you to check out the various lightweight Ubuntu variants available: Lubuntu, Peppermint, Linux Mint Fluxbox Edition, etc. Maybe you will not need to reinvent the wheel. smile Good luck!

If I didnt format my home of my 9.04 install would not my "configuration files from a working CrunchBang install " be in place?
I have tried all of your suggested distro's[including statler OB&xfce] and still love my CB 9.04 the best by a long shot. Most no 64bit. This computer is not in need of lightweight I just prefer crunchbang openbox menus.
I did a test minimal install of lucid 64bit and a lubuntu-desktop. Which sort of worked [no sound/bluetooth] but some more package installs after ubuntu forum time would no doubt fix. But I would prefer a "CrunchBang-esque" Ubuntu over the slower menus[to use] in lubuntu and again I would need to format my home.
thanx for response

I'm on a crunchified Lubuntu Lucid meanwhile, and since it took a time to configure, i won't change that now. But if had to reinstall, i' d take the new madbox 10.04 as a base: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/69238/#p69238. That's a real preconfigured Openbox-Lucid. If you don't like/need/use the adeskbar-launcher, just install oblogout to get Logout working again.

Re: lucid crunchbang

Lucid is wierd. On a big german Ubuntu wiki (ubuntuusers.de) they have this article about Grip, the gnome CD ripper. They say it's probably the most famous CD ripper for Linux... but there is no Lucid version... at least not in the repos. You have to add Grip via PPA. Most famous not there anymore? Hehe...

I'm so meta, even this acronym

Hello again Dove, I confess I've only taken Lucid for a brief test drive, not  enough to be an expert. sad Theoretically keeping your /home is a good idea, but I have not tried it. I've heard of #! users who have copied their /home settings to all kinds of other distros (Arch, Slitaz, etc.) so it seems likely going Jaunty to Lucid could work, with some tweaking.

I am still using #! 9.04 on a couple of computers, it is still a nice release. However, I am gradually transitioning to Debian between now and end-of-support in October; no complaints from me about the switch from Ubuntu. smile

Sound advice. A Lucid upgrade would drag in a horrible amount of gnome libraries because Ubuntu includes its desktop meta-package as a recommended dependency of many common packages. This type of behaviour is one of the reasons (amongst others) that CrunchBang is now based on Debian.

I have 8g ram and 32bit would cut that to 3g I think[I also own 64bit Fluendo codec's]  . I have done a minimal install with no desktop[no gnome] on my test computer and I think I have found some crunchbang forum pages with instructions on crunchbanging other distro's [like ubuntu is now]
the problem I have now is no volwheel in ubuntu lucid repositories and I have otherwise broke my custom 64bit lubuntu install but I will keep trying and do it again. - thanx for response

Have a look at this. It does a nicer job than volwheel and should work just fine in Ubuntu.

Your volumeicon works great-thanx
I've got a mostly working 64bit lucibang working on my test computer. I'm only needing to get shutdown/logout working.

Re: lucid crunchbang

Not sure if this helps. My current desktop setup is Karmic built from minimal with openbox + conky + wbar +xcompmgr-dana and it worked out fine, I have a dial-up connection and it took me several days to get all the downloads from the ubuntu servers.

I downloaded the Lucid Kubuntu DVD elsewhere and it includes the text mode installer, so I ran through that, and manually deselected the Kubuntu-desktop package, giving myself a full on lucid text mode install in only a few minutes. From there openbox, xinit, synaptic, xterm, etc only took a few hours to install (for my 48k modem for anyone in the modern world about 10 minutes).

I don't know about lucid from the Ubuntu cd but, on my Kubuntu setup (without installing KDE yet) I don't seem to have many gnome dependencies. I would go Debian, but for me it is easier to get Ubuntu cds than Debian.

I've got a mostly working 64bit lucibang working on my test computer. I'm only needing to get shutdown/logout working.

To get logout working, I installed the oblogout-package (not in the repos) and put a link to oblogout into my openbox rightclick menu.
For getting reboot and shutdown to work again, i edited /etc/sudoers like shown here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/69314/#p69314
I also put the reboot & shutdown commands to the menu.xml, so now it's just two mouseclicks to shutdown/reboot instantly.

BTW: a fresh madbox10.04 install on my eeepc (901)  yesterday took only 1,17Gb of diskspace with wifi/sound /fn-Keys working out of the box...

I've installed a oblogout deb {didn't say if it was 64bit but appeared to install} I added the line in /etc/sudoers as per the link but I don't know the "reboot & shutdown commands" too put into menu.xml {I'm planning on using obmenu} so would you be so kind to disclose? and the "put a link to oblogout into my openbox rightclick menu" I can only find a "menu.xml" but no  rightclick menu?

Re: lucid crunchbang

If you're going to use oblogout, then just add a new item to your menu with oblogout as the command. You can use obmenu to easily edit the Openbox menu.

Re: lucid crunchbang

@omns, thx for the volumeicon reccommend.  It's much more efficient than volwheel for me.

In case anyone wants it in repo form.  I added it to my PPA for lucid. (should work ok on squeeze setups as well)

Sorry for beeing late...

For adding the commands to your rightclick-menu just put this at the end of your menu.xml right before "</openbox_menu>" :

<item label="Logout">
            <action name="Execute">
                <execute>
                    oblogout
                </execute>
            </action>
        </item>
        <item label="Reboot">
            <action name="Execute">
                <execute>
                    sudo reboot
                </execute>
            </action>
        </item>
        <item label="Shutdown">
            <action name="Execute">
                <execute>
                    sudo shutdown -h now
                </execute>
            </action>
        </item>
    </menu>

Re: lucid crunchbang

Why make separate commands for reboot and shutdown when you can use oblogout for that?

Just speed and lazyness. Starting oblogout on my system takes some 4 seconds til the buttons appear - and i than i have to click a button.
Reboot and shutdown in the openbox-menu start at once without delay. It's just two mouseclicks... cool

It's also a thing of personal preference. Like - while most of the #!ers seem to use tint2 as tray, i still swear on lxpanel because of its self-updating menu.

Re: lucid crunchbang

Currently running lucid with crunchbang mods/configs/scripts.

I've added some stuff to my ppa.

https://launchpad.net/~rstrcogburn/+archive/ppa

volumeicon, ceni, and currently building rezlooks.

for a more #! like lucid experience.

Re: lucid crunchbang

I'll start posing my recent builds here to avoid spamming #! forums with non-#! stuff.  I'll close the ceni thread, if I can't maybe you can help OMNS.

Re: lucid crunchbang

Thing is installing recommends as depends is Debian policy also, though they don't seem as carried away about it.

I will probably try Lucid / CrunchBang  (break it, learn from it)

I was running standard lucid, and i then followed this wiki page:
