Topic: [SOLVED] X is broken - Module nouveau not found

hi all,

yesterday i made a #aptitude update&&aptitude safe-upgrade and since then my X is broken.

say something like:

FATAL:Module nouveau not found

Fatal server error:
no screens found

with HAL wasn't supposed to be everything automatic?

i tried to reinstal xserver-xorg and xserver-xorg-nouveau but got no luck.

when i tried #dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg nothing happened....

i also tried to do a #modprobe nouveau(module) but there is no module.

what am i doing wrong, with Debian i never had this problem...

I don't have a machine that uses nouveau so I'm only guessing but maybe the latest nouveau driver is incompatible with the default kernel (2.6.32-3) which is pinned from the default Statler repo. Try installing the 2.6.32-5 kernel from the squeeze repo.

I was just reading on the Debian forums that the way nouveau is handled has changed in 2.6.32-5. I'll be interested to know if an update solves your problems.

There is already a post about this, doesn't look like its nv specific.

I'm not usually the one to cry "do a search first" but this topic was at the top of the Statler section prior to this one.

It's not usual for anyone around here to cry that out either. I'd hate to see it become a habit.

I've referenced the discussion here to the other thread. As both have different titles and search terms it will probably be useful to have them both in existence.

first of all thanks for your reply, i found that topic by doing a seacrh, but my problem was different, my X don't freeze, it simply doesn't work.

second as you said and i found out on fedora forum, when i installed linux-image-2.6.32-5-686, everything worked.

once again i'm sorry if i done something wrong by opening another thread.

No problem, I didn't mean to come off rude. I had the same problem myself. Just thought it was connected to the other topic. No crime in starting a new one. Anyway, glad you got it sorted.
