Topic: Alpha 2 initial experience

This looks like a really solid release with many of the alpha 1 niggles sorted out. I've only tested it on and off for a day, but my initial findings are as follows:


1. Post-install script runs through but doesn't actually do anything.
   - (probably related to point 2)

2. User account was not added to sudo
  - To fix use visudo as root and add: youruser ALL=(ALL) ALL

3. Network Manager is not picking up my onboard nVidia network adapter.
  - Fixed by enabling the secondary onboard nVidia NIC in the BIOS. Now it sees both cards - weird.

4. Can't install Chrome/Chromium-browser. Dependencies missing.
   - Had to add the main squeeze source. By default only the security update channels were enabled.

5. Grub did not pick up my Windows 7 partition.
  - Fixed by running update-grub

So far so good then, thanks Corenominal!

edit: I should have probably mentioned I used the unetbootin method of installing.

Similarly, well done on a solid alpha baseline.

I've had some weird problems with VirtualBox guest additions for this (and the previous) alpha. The shared folders module refuses to build. All the others are fine.

Grub not detecting windows (or any other os, for that matter), appears to be a grub bug because the identical thing happens under Ubuntu 10.04.  You can solve in the same way on Ubuntu btw.

Had the Grub thing with Mint and Peppermint installs, nothing an update-grub has not fixed. Together with 9.04 got some good CPU usage (58%) when viewing BBC iplayer (flash) with Iceweasel on my Athlon 2500+ with xcompmgr, maxes it out without compositing, still only using the open source Ati drivers. Have replaced Peppermint with #! alpha2 as my linux distro of choice. Alpha 1 was stable enough for me, in fact no problems. The only thing i have done different in alpha2 is to install the disk manager as i was too lazy to edit my fstab to get my windows and raid drives mounted automatically. Printing with my Epson R200 no problem and ram usage rarely goes above 300 Mb. A Fantastic OS well put together and well supported. As still a novice with only 6 months of Linux experience this has been and still is a pleasure to use and learn about. It just works an more important keeps working.
