Re: Tips for privacy and security

Send everything to .macromedia down a black hole (/dev/null)

Also use SRWARE Iron instead of Chromium - see Chrome vs Iron

You can use bleachbit to clean these folders (of course, you have to install bleachbit first):

bleachbit -c chromium.cache chromium.cookies chromium.current_session chromium.dom
chromium.form_history chromium.history chromium.search_engines chromium.vacuum

bleachbit -c flash.cache flash.cookies

There is not much difference between Chromium and Iron, just some privacy settings.

Pancakes
1 cup all-purpose flour, 2 eggs, 1 cup of  milk, 3 tbs water, 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 apple, few grains of salt
Preheat your pan or griddle to about medium heat. Slowly combine the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, work in sliced apple. Each pancake should take about a minute or so on each side. Serve with plum jam, maple syrup, or powdered sugar

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Use scroogle.org as your search engine instead of google. (Sorry if this has been posted before I didn't bother reading the whole thread)
..Oh and stop using chromium/google stuff if you worry about privacy wink

I thought there wasn't any privacy difference between Iron and Chromium with all communication with the mothership turned off?

Re: Tips for privacy and security

In fact, I read often enough, that Iron isn't as secure as they say it is. Chromium is your best choice.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

i don't really like the iron myself, but it seems more uptodate than the chromium from the stable repos.
and i agree that there might be some unknown security bugs.

when it comes to privacy there's this comparison on their website:
http://www.srware.net/en/software_srwar … s_iron.php
@tradetaxfree > which is chrome [not chromium] vs. iron
not sure, but maybe one can replace iron with chromium in this comparison...
anyone able to confirm this?

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Quick newbie question about these cookies and LSO's.  I know deleting is good overall, but when they are accepted and put on your computer, isnt the damage, as far as tracking, already done?

If they allow some sort of a cross site tracking, then yes, it is. Everything else is irrelevant, as it only exists for the current session.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Ahhh ok, I saw a tool for firefox to prevent this kind of thing.  Thanks Awebb as usual for your quick and exact answer. Ill google some more about cookies and find some info before I continue to ask questions about this, dont wanna fill up a thread with questions already answered. tongue

I am completely in the dark when it comes to internet security, which Im not proud of.  Been recently trying to change that.  This thread has been a major help.  Complacency kills tongue

Try adding UA Control in there too. You can spoof your User Agent String.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Move Firefox cache to RAM:

about:config
New key string: browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
Content: /dev/shm/firefox-cache

/dev/shm is some sort of a ramdisk, you can store data directly in the RAM instead the HDD. Make sure you don't put anything important into that folder, it dies on reboot.

This gives you, by the way, often enough a fair performance boost.

Careful with the commercial privacy links, lain - these could be interpreted as spam.  We already have plenty of evidence that you're a real person, so we can let this slide with a warning; if this had been your first post, we might have assumed you were a spambot and booted you.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Has anyone been made aware that the more security configurations you make, the more easily trackable you are? It's sort of a privacy paradox; it might be better to use as many defaults as possible to blend in with the crowd, rather than try to separate yourself from it.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

I dont know how much you can trust these tools. Well they hide you for a while, but if someone wants to find you, it's game over. If you want your desired privacy use multiple email accounts with fake info, dont use sites like facebook, hi5, myspace and so on and that's it, no need to slow down your internet connection just to use a different proxy when downloading a picture or reading the news.

Geeqie (image viewer) because it has thumbnail options like clearing the database, though this can be done manually or with f ex Bleachbit as well, and the option to disable the recent function.

Plus it is just a really good program for viewing large collections of files. For added privacy, you can make archives, I recommend .cbz, and then open them in GQ after mounting them or directly with a program like Okular (Supports up to 2GB .cbz files for me with encryption, provided I put them on a secondary (encrypted) disk that isn't busy.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Since this is a security  thread, I gotta mention that parcellite, the clipboard app, does not encrypt its contents, if you copy passwords and what not they'll be saved in plain text on your hard drive.

A ticket was open to request this feature, it is still being worked on.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

^meanwhile you can use parcellite's "clear" option after copying anything sensitive.

If you want to get rid of your useragent entirely, create a new String preference in about:config

general.useragent.override

and leave it blank.

Re: Tips for privacy and security

Also, does anyone know how to disable your browser from sending plugin information to the website?  Why the heck does the website need to know what plugins you have?  The browser should be able to say "Oh, you need this plugin...please install it", which it already can.

I would not recommend this for facebook users. After doing this, facebook.com told me it didn't support my browser, and recommended me to install Firefox.. roll
