Topic: Newb need help.

Grettings from Brazil, well, I`m now officially an crunchbang proudly owner for about 6 hours now. I must admit that I`m loving it. I`m relatively new to linux, I`ve been trying on both my D510MO and my dell mini 10. So let`s go to the questions:

- First, how do I make some kind of dock, I saw thousands of topics but none helped me. See screenshot below for explanation.
http://chubidaba.deviantart.com/art/Cru … -171815613

- How do I set up the keyboard, at the installation part i chose Brazil - Abnt 2, it`s ok, but when I login the keyboard it's messed up. (dell mini 10 has english keyboard so no problems with it, my abnt2 keyboard otherwise...)

- I`m having trouble with sudo, when I try to install something, e.g apt-get pidgin, it complains about permission, when I sudo apt-get pidgin, It let me input the password for sudo but gives a error "you is not in the sudoers file", I`ve searched and people said edit the sudoers file, but without sudo permission I can`t open it...

- notify It`s bitching with me, I edited every single letter from that file and It doesn`t let me move the notification box to the bottom-right corner. It just display at top of conky... And I found a guide at ubuntu forum for that, no link sorry, It`s something about gravity, It worked partially, now the box is almost at the middle of the screen. Bottom right people !

Since I`m a noob I will have lot`s of questions that I`ll be making as my crunchbang knowledge advances.
thanks for everyone reading this, and thanks for everyone that responds It.
(Sorry for my english...)

D510MO + dell mini 10, both at 2 gb and crunching for now.

Re: Newb need help.

The dock will have an transparent background so I can see my desktop. This image it`s only to illustrate the question.

Also having trouble with the network thing, shows disconected/unsuported all time.

I forget to mention, I use Statler Alpha 2 since the normal one 9.04 don`t go along with my 1980x1080 display, only resolution was 600x400...

Sorry Chubidaba I don't think I can help much with these, but since no-one else has posted yet:

This doesn't seem right at all. You should be in the sudoers file - maybe you could try installing your system again? If you don't want to do that, a more complicated solution is to restart your computer and at the grub menu (you may have to press the Shift key to get it) select the "recovery mode" option. This will drop you into a root shell where you can do anything with root permissions.

are you using the openbox or the xfce version of statler? if it is openbox you have to edit the file ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh and find the line about "setxkbm ..." and make it look like this: "setxkbm br" (is "br" right for brasil? maybe change these two letters to fit to what you need as keymap)
but about the whole kb issue there are a lot of threads in the forum -> http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/search/1133027739/
hope this solves one problem...
and btw hello to #! and forums.

Isn't there a file he can edit to put him in the sudoers group? I remember having the same problem on sidux, and I was told to use vim to edit some file.. Sorry, don't remember which one.

@Chubidaba Alternatively, you could try using su, entering the password, installing your necessary applications, and then closing the terminal. When I couldn't use sudo on sidux, that's what I did.

Re: Newb need help.

To edit the sudoers file heres what I would do:

1. Use su root to become root
2. Run visudo EDITOR=nano
3. Add a line like: yourusername ALL=(ALL) ALL
4. Save the file (Ctrl-O) and Exit (Ctrl-X)

Re: Newb need help.

@anonymous:
don't you need to be in the sudoers file to do step 1?
(If not.... every user would be able to add him/herself to the sudoers file, which would be a security risk, isn't it?)

I was thinking that Chubidaba could solve this by booting into a live session, and then edit the /etc/sudoers file on the root partition. Visudo doesn't work in that case, so you could use nano or gedit to edit the file.

Re: Newb need help.

No but you do need a root password. In hindsight, its bad advice for distros which have root disabled by default (is Debian one of 'em?).

Re: Newb need help.

^ Debian itself is not, but Statler is; there have been a couple threads on this in the development forum.

Re: Newb need help.

Well guys, thanks for the help, writing a mental note down: 'NEVER put a blank root password again'.
I realy don`t know what solved the problem, I`ve googled sudo help, and tryed every single site, something helped.

I`m searching for a way to install some other packages, I`m 'from' ubuntu were you don't need to raise a finger, now I'm having problems with apt-get, I think it`s because of the package servers, the defauts of statler 2 don`t have most programs I use. ITT: how do I install exaile, some-dock-aplication, whatevers ?

Thanks a lot for the replies, very helpfull guys.

I'd be very surprised if exaile wasn't in the repos. Try an apt-get update and then apt-get install exaile?

Re: Newb need help.

I must be doing something really wrong here, I fresh installed the system run the terminal config thing and opened terminator.
(I chose English and USA, since I don`t like translated stuff. Just change the keyboard to BR and ABNT2 at the keyboard file luc sent. Later thought.)

After a sudo apt-get install pidgin, i entered the sudo password, It reads packages, gets dependency blablabla, and give me an error, 'package pidgin could not be found'.

Since it`s a fresh install, Synaptic only has 3 mirrors.

http://packages.crunchbanglinux.org/statler/
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/
http://security.debian.org/

With it`s very very odd, since the LIVE CD CAN INSTALL, I`m tiping from it in a xp machine, live cd from the same pendrive I installed crunchbang statler 2 on my other computer. sudo apt-get install pidgin gets a lonnnng terminal with an y/n option on the end due the size of the package, and normally install. Odd...

edit: it`s not only pidgin, emphaty, exaile, rhytmbox. The only program working with the other system is emesene. With it`s lame and I want to use pidgin...

Re: Newb need help.

Did you do a 'sudo apt-get update' before trying to install pidgin? That might help...

Re: Newb need help.

I managed to install pidgin trough a loooooong dependency surfing on debian packages

get pidgin package, ow it depends on blablabla, lets download it, but wait, it depends on otherblablabla, with depends with depends.... After half-hour later, pidgin is installed normally obeying it`s dependencies and its ok...

apt-get isn`t being nice to me, i thought it was problems with the packages/my location, I`m from Brazil, configuring the installer to English-USA, then configuring the clock and the keyb. Even configuring Portuguese-Brazil, I get the same error, so...

Re: Newb need help.

Hi guys long time no see, advancing my knowledges a lot at this week, vacation is a nice thing. Anyway.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with my crunchbang, relating to the updates ? This is my last crunchbang problem, I searched everywhere and I didn't get a solution. Am I doing something wrong ?

At the moment I write this, distrowatch.com indicates that the version of firefox present on crunchbanglinux is 3.5.9. I not in my house, but the version of iceweasel there is 3.4.x. Firefox is currently on 3.6.8, that`s a lot no ? Damm debian based. But anyway, even with apt-get install update and apt-get install upgrade my system doesn't actualize, am I doing something wrong here ? Please post your mirrors file (lol, don't remember name), so I can see what's the problem. Any suggestions are appreciated.

My signature was updated now, so I guess it's not showing up, anyway, D510MO and dell mini 10, running statler 2.

Re: Newb need help.

This is a good example of why Statler should follow Debian convention of root and users instead of Ubuntu sudo. It gives continuity to new users migrating from just about any other distro than Ubuntu and it's derivatives.

Re: Newb need help.

Hi Chubidaba,
It sounds like you are not keeping your system up-to-date. The following commands should upgrade all your applications to the latest Debian Squeeze version:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If that does not work please copy & paste the entire terminal output here so we can help. smile

Re: Newb need help.

The distrowatch website tells you the version of the browser on the Live CD.

If you have CrunchBang 9.04 and run an update, you should be able to get Firefox 3.6.8.

And if you have Statler and update, your Iceweasel will be at version 3.5.11.

Re: Newb need help.

Starting a fresh install here, I'm going to write down everyting I do so you guys know if I'm doing something wrong. Here is around 12 now, around 4 I'll post the hole system instalation process... (even if not helpfull)

Re: Newb need help.

I totally wanted to say on the last post: I'll go out get drunk everyday from now on and totaly forgot about the subject over the next week. big_smile. I think this is my first day sober and without hangover on my vacation. Anyway, were is a loooooong process of installing, don't read or you'll get bored.

-Well, I`ve written the text I was supposed to write here, but it ends up that it did works fine... Everything is up to date now. (crunchbang, why so random ?)

-After the initialization script, sudo apt-get update gave me the 'you are not in the sudoers file !', but running su+visudo+username all all all fixes it. (again, why so ?)

-After updating and stuff, here is the screen shot of the 3 commands i was instructed by you guys earlier:
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5883/2010090912840410511920x.png
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5883/2 … 11920x.png

Everything is ok wright ? No, because pidgin doesn't install !
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4453/2010090912840926151920x.png
reading packages list done
building tree of dependency
reading information of state done
lol can't find package pidgin

This happens with every program.

Re: Newb need help.

Erase the contents of your /etc/sources.list file and put these lines:

## CrunchBang Linux 10.xx aka Statler
## Compatible with Debian Squeeze, but use at your own risk.
deb http://packages.crunchbanglinux.org/statler/ statler main
## Official Debian Repositories:
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main

Then do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install pidgin
