Topic: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

Hi:

I'm feeling pretty dumb here, as I've installed both of these before, but it's been a while. Can anyone direct me to the repositories where these are, if any, or the best guide for installing the current versions of both? I'm not a huge fan of VLC.

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

Are those packages not already available?

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mplayer totem-xine

Wouldn't this pull in Totem as well?  I love Totem, but if you don't want it and all its dependencies, I'd suggest libxine1 instead of totem-xine.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

I installed mplayer (actually smplayer) and i think some *xine was installed automatically...
so i suggest to try

sudo apt-get install mplayer

first...

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

@pvsage: I remember that about Totem. I'll try Xine without it next.

Meanwhile, I tried installing mplayer, and got this:

Are there some repositories I'm missing? I did apt-get update right before trying this.

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

First make sure your internet access is working correctly. If it is, try disabling medibuntu:

Synaptic -> Settings -> Repositories

And changing mirrors:

Synaptic -> Settings -> Repositores -> change the server for "Download from" -> reload your sources list.

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

That worked, for xine and mplayer. Can anyone recommend a better front end for it besides Totem?

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

gnome-mplayer...smplayer...kmplayer if you like KDE...

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

I don't know if they're "better", but you can try gxine or xine-ui.

Also why do you want both mplayer and xine? Mplayer can playback almost any format.

@pvsage - aren't those front-ends for mplayer not xine?

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

Hmm... it's been a while since I messed with this stuff.

Basically, I want to be able to play DVDs and watch any video files in any format. I've installed mplayer, gmplayer, and xine. I suppose I can remove xine once mplayer works properly.

.wmv files don't work quite right. I can hear sound, but there's no video. Before anyone asks, I believe I have the win64 codecs already.

DVDs are pretty much the same thing. They used to work under VLC, but I didn't like the quality, and the volume was way too low. I'm sure there's some stupid tweak somewhere, but I'm having trouble finding it.

EDIT: I tried smplayer too, and at first it looked ok, but then I got a window warning me I had an "old mplayer." Not sure why it did that, since I installed it tonight. Anyway, I couldn't get the dvd to work right after that. No sound in smplayer, and a splash logo permanently obscuring the video.

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

@anonymous:  You're absolutely right.  How 'bout oxine or xine-console?

@Time Lord:  Unless I'm mistaken, the default install of Totem is with the gstreamer backend, and unless you install it --without-recommends, it automatically pulls in the -good, -bad, and -ugly (*rimshot*) plugins, which includes codecs that cover over 99% of all the media I've downloaded.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

Ok, so given what I've already downloaded, what should I do? Get rid of all those and reinstall mplayer, this time with totem?

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

I remember that CrunchBang 9.04 comes with all the gstreamer plugins already installed.  I'd just purge mplayer, totem, and xine, then install totem and totem-gstreamer to make sure Totem knows what back-end to use.  (I've never met a file that mplayer could play that Totem couldn't play better, so I wouldn't bother with mplayer unless you just really like it.)  Just remember to change the default applications for whatever file extensions you have (wmv, flv, mp4, etc.) to "movie player" and they'll be opening in Totem.

while ( ! ( succeed = try() ) );

Did you install SMPlayer from the normal Ubuntu repos or from the PPA? I would try with both these PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/mplayer
https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/smplayer

Ok, I got all the video formats to work, but now my dvds won't play. It won't even recognize them. I think I may have trashed the codecs or something.

Otherwise, it's looking good. big_smile

aptitude search dvd

Which packages does this say are installed?

Try installing libdvdcss.

Re: [SOLVED]Mplayer, Xine in Crunchbang?

It seems I already have libdvdcss2. I can't find libdvdcss in Synaptic, and in terminal it just tried to install libdvdcss2 instead, then tells me I already have it. neutral

EDIT: When I launch Totem from the terminal, I get this:

** (totem:12104): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/gdata/tlslite/utils/cryptomath.py:9: DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead
  import sha

Then if I try to play the DVD, I get:

(totem:12104): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_mount_guess_content_type_sync: assertion `G_IS_MOUNT (mount)' failed

(totem:12104): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Does this make sense to anyone?

EDIT: I installed gnome-settings-daemon, rebooted, and the same message still keeps popping up. Argh!
