Topic: shift + certain keys give wrong keys

I have tried multiple keyboard layouts and none work. I do not have the problem in plain ubuntu or windows 7. But, in crunchbang 9.04 and in Statler ( currently in statler) when I press shift and the key to get a tilde, instead I get the following character : ¬   When I press shift +2 for @  symbol, I instead get double quotes. In order for me to get the @ sign I am actually hitting shift + double quote key. So far its only these three keys I can find causing problems.

This is a 7811u laptop ( gateway )

Any other ideas or where to look? so far this is the only problem I have encountered in crunchbang, and while I can live with it, it is kind of annoying.

edit: crap I can't figure out where my pipe is... now that I can't do without.

CB, both 9.04 and Statler, is a UK based distro. The keyboard layouts there are different from the layouts here. Have you checked that you are using a US layout? It should tell you in the systray. It'll be a little icon saying either GB or US or something.

Re: shift + certain keys give wrong keys

I just fixed it. My locale was set correctly to en_US, but I wasn't paying attention to the UK part.  after doing a dpkg-reconfigure for the keymapping and choosing other then USA all is good. A reboot was required as well.

Guess I didn't try all of them.

Interesting though - I checked another maching that has crunchbang installed which is a desktop. The keymapping is also still set to UK, but all the keys are mapped properly.

Thank you for the information.. something I'll definitely remember in the future.

No problem! I had the same experience when I installed Stater. big_smile
