Topic: Crunchbang Statler for laptop???

I have a Dell Inc. Inspiron 1545 laptop that I use when travelling. It has 2.00 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo, 3548 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory, 309.54 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3.

I was thinking of dual booting it with #! Statler. I know that some distros are not the easy to configure with wireless internet service. A lot of motels, etc offer free wireless internet service. I am seeking advice about whether or not there are any known issues with configuring #! for wireless internet service. I can get to the internet with XP most of the time but don't like to surf the web without using some linux distro. Any advice would be appreciated. I know this is a Crunchbang forum so don't be biased.

Thanks,
Harold

Re: Crunchbang Statler for laptop???

Hi Harold, much depends on which wireless card you have. smile You can use the terminal command 'lspci' to figure out what kind you have (if you don't know already).

Most cards should work just fine in #! Statler. A few cards require "nonfree" firmware. Feel free to post on the forums if you have any issues. (In fact, it is good if you do... since Statler is still in Alpha testing, it might be possible to build support for your card into the final release, with your help testing!)

Re: Crunchbang Statler for laptop???

Could this be the wireless card? I used Belarc to get the profile.

I also have this:Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

Does this help?

Yes it does. smile A quick Google search shows that Dell Wireless 1397 is a re-branded Broadcom 4312 card (this is very typical of Dell laptops; I have one in my Dell Mini netbook).

If you were using "vanilla" Debian, your card would require "nonfree" firmware to work, however #!'s developer has thoughtfully provided the necessary firmware so your card should just work out-of-the-box. If you run into any problems, you can use this wiki page to troubleshoot: http://wiki.debian.org/wl

If you want to test this prior to committing to an install, you can give the Live CD a spin. smile
