Topic: [Solved] Latest nVIDIA Driver Install Problem

Hi all,

I have been attempting an install of the latest nvidia drivers as per the threads in the forum, but I seem to keep running in to troubles. If I do the command line way, when I CTRL+ALT+F1, kill GDM, then start the driver install, it fails saying it cant get rid of the Nouveau module. I'm not entirely sure how to get around this..

Secondly, I looked at the other set of instructions that install through apt-get, using the nVIDIA GLX drivers. I am running a GTX 260, and am concerned with having the latest drivers possible for my card (for BOINC purposes, among others). Are the nVIDIA GLX drivers the same as the latest from nVIDIA, or seperate?

If anyone could give me some advice (I'm on Statler Alpha 2), on how to get these drivers installed and running, please let me know.

Re: [Solved] Latest nVIDIA Driver Install Problem

1. Do you have nouveau installed?

sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Also make sure nouveau is not used as the driver in xorg.conf

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2. Apt-get grabs stuff from the repository so its separate from what you can get off NVIDIA's website.

Thanks a lot anonymous.

I installed the right linux-headers, and re-ran the installation with success!

Now, how do I find out that it worked, another words, what command can I use to find the driver version of my graphics card, just to be positive it was successful?

Nevermind, I nabbed lshw off of the repo's and it checks out. Thanks again for the help.

That doesn't work for me. I removed the nouveau drivers but I still get the system is using nouveau error. I rebooted still same.

I added sid repositories
installed kernel-source, nvidia-glx, nvidia-xconfig.
removed repositories.
restarted.
installed nvidia driver (from their website)
worked like a charm.
kernel using it.
