Topic: Absolute beginner help

I have a 'Compaq Presario 1500' laptop that has about 30GB HD, 256 MB RAM and a pentium(R) 4  1.60GHz with XP on it.  I am running Ubuntu on my desktop computer and love it.  I wanted this other one so I could install something exactly like crunchbang because I thought it would be an excellent learning tool.  However the very first lesson is causing me to pull my hair out.

I downloaded both the torrent and HTTP iso's (http://www.crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/downloads) using my ubuntu system and burned them to disks and put them in the DVD reader on the Compaq.  It doesn't respond to either disk and when I open the drive it's just a blank screen.

Please, can someone explain to me exactly how to install crunchbang onto this machine so I can get rid of Windows (and eventually my dependency on MS completely!!!)

Thank you thank you thank you a million times to any and all who reply!!!

Re: Absolute beginner help

how did you burn it? Does the compaq recognize other DVDs you've burned using the same brand of DVDs?

Re: Absolute beginner help

Ubuntu applications, accessories, CD/DVD creator drag and drop the file from the download file.
I don't know if it recognizes other DVD's burned of the same brand, but it did play a commercially produced audio CD.

Re: Absolute beginner help

I also downloaded the ISO to the compaq (I don't know why)  there's no way to open or install it that way huh?

Re: Absolute beginner help

try a CD instead of a dvd then, i've had a few laptops that only liked reading CDs, could never properly handle DVDs.
And I'm not familiar with Ubuntu burning tools. Try xfburn, its what crunchbang uses. make sure you select the 'iso' option instead of making a music cd etc. (its the first screen you see i believe). Be sure to burn at slow speed.

Basically if the computer can't boot from the CD/DVD its because either the image burnt isn't valid (either burnt wrong or the download was bad), or its an issue with the computer.

You could try a USB installation if you need to (you can find a guide for that in the wiki).

Re: Absolute beginner help

Is that Brasero? I would not recommend using Brasero. On the other hand, I haven't had any problem using the one that I think you're using with Ubuntu, the one found in accessories that comes with the distro.

When I did #! before Statler, which I haven't really messed with, there was a checksum. Look for some help on how to validate the checksums of the images you downloaded against the checksums provided for the "good," images.

-The iso can become corrupted or damaged, that sort of thing, which might be causing you problems.

Also, I too recommend you try a CD instead of DVD. With a couple desktop boxes I've had bunked up disk drives that wouldn't read DVD's of any kind, let alone write to them. (Also, a lot cheaper for you to use CD's for small images.)

When you burn the image to your disk, are there any odd messages that come up during or after the process on your screen? Is there a message that tells you the image has been successfully burned? Any messages at all? If so, write them down and then tell us what they say, when they showed up during the process and if this is the first time you've seen these messages with this particular disk and this particular image.

When you have finished burning the image to the disk, is there actually any data written to the disk? I have seen disks take fifteen minutes being "written," in a drive, with no error messages, have the burning program tell the user it's been a success and then find that there actually hadn't been any data written to the disk. When you put the disk into the drive and close the drive, wait a few seconds. Then open up that drive using your operating system, (for a Windows user, this would mean going to "Computer," and double clicking on that drive.) Once you are "looking," at the disk, after it has been burned, is there anything actually on the disk?

Re: Absolute beginner help

Also you could try burning the ISOs from Windows. Imgburn is very good for such task.

Re: Absolute beginner help

I believe it IS called Bresario.  I'm at work now so I can't check it.  I wanted to try installing the burn program FSM recommended, but my wireless went down after that last post I submitted yesterday.

as far as messages go, it asks me if I want to burn the info to the disk as a file or just information.  I don't really understand the differance, but I tried both and neither one worked. I did find an option to change the speed, I wish I would have written down the choices so I could learn about them it was something like; Max speed (default) 2.0 DVD and 4.0 DVD.  I picked the one with the lowest number assuming that would be the slowest burn. It does tell me it is a successful burn and the data transfer is 100% complete and then, much to my dismay the system froze up.  The CD/DVD creator window stayed bright and the rest of the screen went dim and the cursor would move but that was it.  I will be stopping on the way home for a new wifi expansion card and some blank CD's (suggestion on brand or quality?)

When I open 'My Computer' on XP with the burned disk in and click on the D: drive it just opens a blank screen.  I don't think there's anything on the disk, at least the laptop's not seeing anything.  The Desktop computer is new.  I haven't burned anything else with it before.

I've read on multiple sites that Windows can't burn ISO's.  I tried anyway, I don't think the laptop has a burner (if it does there's something wrong with it)

And finally I don't know what checksum is/are.  So I will be searching and reading about that today.

Ah, I misread your post. I thought you burned your discs from the laptop. Did not notice you also mentioned a desktop.

Re: Absolute beginner help

Maybe your computer just can't handle booting from a live CD. Why not try the alternate install, found here:

Re: Absolute beginner help

You can also try Statler. Its installer is text-based to begin with.

Windows can't by itself, is all. You need to download other programs to do it. Anonymous recommended a good one.

because that method is for a system that already has Linux (tell me if I'm wrong here)and the system I'm trying to install #! on is an XP system.  I might try the USB method tonight.

FSM- The Compaq, which is the computer currently running on Windows doesn't have a burner, but if it did I would surely try the recommended program.  I will be taking your other advice though (xfburn and CD instead of DVD).

You're wrong. Though not fully smile

For this alternative install, you do what is called a "minimal" installation of Ubuntu. This will install only the very basics of the Linux (in this case, Ubuntu) Operating System. Note that the very basics is just a shell. Now, from this shell you will download and run the #! installation script, which is a script that will download, install and configure everything just as it is in the regular #! installation. When completed, no-one could tell what installation method you have done, because the result is exactly the same.

But, as Anonymous said, it might be better to install #! Statler right away. This will be the next version of #! (version 10, 9.04 will be unsupported after October) Statler is installed through a text-based installer, which should run on every computer.

Let's do it and don't screw it.

Re: Absolute beginner help

I got the ubuntu 10.04 LTS disk in the mail today.  Think that will have the minimul option?  Well,  I guess I could always pop it in and find out.

Re: Absolute beginner help

no, the minimal install is different from the standard. You need to specifically download the mini iso.

Re: Absolute beginner help

Grrrrrrrr:(  I installed the Ubuntu OS using the disk I got in the mail.   I thought it would be easier and figured at least I'd have linux and I could just play with that for now.  I don't want it though.  It's still slow (no doubt because of my week RAM).  I WANT CRUNCHBANG. I'd like to just do the minimal install but now that UBUNTU is on the Compaq it won't even detect my wifi.
alright, I'm trying the USB install.  It looks like my only option at this point.  I can't wait untill the day I look back at this situation and laugh at how hard it was for me to solve this problem.

Re: Absolute beginner help

big_smile  OK!  I installed Xfburn and stold a blank CD from work (I think IBM can afford it)  and have now burned a CD and my laptop responded to it.  Now what?  There's a bunch of files in it.

Three directories 'casper'  'isolinux'  and 'preseed'  plus a text file and a README.   But um... no install directions or options. no more info on the "get #!" link either.

I'm sure my greenness is frustrating to those of you who are more experienced.  But  I do appreciate all the help I've been getting.

Once you've burned the CD, pop it in the CD drive and reboot. With laptops, you usually have to specify in the boot options that you want to boot from CD.

Once you've done that, you should see a menu (that is, if you burned the statler ISO) with a few options on it. Using the arrow and enter keys, go down, select the option that says "Text install" and hit enter. It'll prompt you, ask you a few questions, have you specify your partitions (I'd go with the recommended partitioning it offers), set your username and password.

After that, you should have #! statler installed.

A world without what makes us, us. One without you or me.
A world with no differences, this is the world I see.

Re: Absolute beginner help

I thought I had it. hmm

The disk won't boot the system.  Can anone give me some advice on what to do now?
the screen says "This is Crunchbang...bla bla...some options then ...............Loading isolinux: Disk error D1, AX = 4200, drive 9F  Boot failed: press a key to retry."
Same message on retry.
Did I make a mistake on the disk burn?  The only option I had besides speed was "write mode"  I chose the default TAO over SAO.

Re: Absolute beginner help

OK.  I downloaded the lite version and the standard version of the ISO for #! The HTTP, (torrent wouldn't download) and the standard edition and burned each of them on CD's using XFburn, tried both max speed and the only other option for speed "4".  Tried each in both write modes (tao and sao).  Everything fails to burn.  That is, the application stops after about a min. to spit the disk out and says "burn fail".

Re: Absolute beginner help

I just burned it to a DVD (which gave me an additional burnspeed option of 2).  The Laptop, which I am trying to install crunchbang onto does not read DVDs.  But I am currently running the live version on my desktop computer.  So, I know I have a good file.  However I can not burn it to a CD for some reason.  If I could, I'm sure I could boot the Laptop from that disk.  What's going wrong? Any thoughts?

Re: Absolute beginner help

I have a similar problem with braseo, when used with my external DVD burner, it always ends up spitting the disk out saying it failed, though sometimes those "failed" disks work fine. I use K3B now and have had no problems (I liked it the best for years anyway, but Braseo is integrated into nautilius so I tried used it for a time).

However, if you are already getting to the booting stage, I wonder if it is really a burn error or something else going on. Can you burn other discs without failure?

Re: Absolute beginner help

well, I burned the file I want to a DVD without fail.  But I can't use a DVD.  It's XFburn that I'm getting the fail notification on, Braseo actually says it is burning (while simultaneously displaying a notification that it is "preparing to write" for HOURS).  The "failed" CD's show a boot screen with a "failed to boot" notification at the bottom when I start up the laptop with them in it.

Re: Absolute beginner help

Do you have another computer to work with?  The program Unetbootin ( http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ ) is a great tool, if you have a USB flash drive to spare.  Just select ISO, set the path to the file you downloaded, and click ok.
