Topic: pcmanfm / pcmanfm2 folders before files

Hi folks

Whilst I like pcmanfm as a file manager, I'm damned if i can find a way to get it to list files and folders intermingled in modification date order; it always insists on listing all folders first, then files...

Is it even possible?  Googling has yielded nowt...

Ta in advance

I don't think you can do it.  The folders first has become so standard that I don't think people even think it would be wanted any other way.  Maybe you need a different file manager?

Re: pcmanfm / pcmanfm2 folders before files

I've pretty much tried them all I think;  Thunar does what I want, but doesn't have tabs, nautilus does both but is too slow and heavy etc... they all have good features, but none has every feature I'd like.  Ah well.  I used to use Freecommander on windows so I guess i'm a bit spoilt!

Maybe there's something in here?

Let's do it and don't screw it.

Thanks for the link, Unia.  A couple there I'd not seen before, but still none that meet my fussy requirements!

I do believe the answer to your quest lies in xfe. I have just started using this file manger and it is blistering fast. It's written in C using the Fox toolkit (not GTK). You can have 1 or 2 panes with a tree in addition. Once installed, go for the Panel menu and then uncheck 'Directories First'.

Not sure whether it's in #! repos but there's a .deb here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xfe/files/

You will need the Fox toolkit as dependancy. Links are provided from the main site:

I have just started using this file manager and for pure file management tasks, it beat PCManFM and Thunar.

xfe is in the repros  version 1.32 1-4 , which looks a later version than your link.  The repros will also ensure dependencies are met

Well there you go then... no excuses - let's all install and start using Xfe right now big_smile

Re: pcmanfm / pcmanfm2 folders before files

I like it!!  It's well quick, you're right!  Only downsides are that it's not very pretty, and you can't have a toolbar/panel for bookmarks (just the dropdown menu).  Ultimately, I suppose I want a much faster nautilus (and the moon on a stick), but this'll certainly do for the time being.

Re: pcmanfm / pcmanfm2 folders before files

I don't know what came in your install, but I found that the Crystal theme made it look a lot better (but then I used to like KDE3 big_smile)

Nautilus will never be fast sad

It doesn't look that difficult to create a theme, it just doesn't follow the Gnome icon theme specs. You could probably create symlinks to your favourite icon set - I might have a go at this sometime...

I have just tried it, if I can figure out if I can connect to my NAS I might give it a try. The look and text  is configurable in  edit-preference -theme
