Topic: settings

I am very new to crunchbang linux and I am trying to set it up.

I use firefox and gmail

I am not very familiar with some of the the  terminology.
Ive been going round in circles with 2 issues:

1. I have plugged in external speakers and cant get them to work.
( they had worked fine in my prev pc)

2. I am trying to set up a default media player for audia/ visual clips etc. and to download some as well.

I thought audacity looked likely but cant see how to configure.

I wonder if anyone could poss help me.

George

Re: settings

Welcome to the forums!

1) To  troubleshoot your sound problem, start a terminal (Super + T) and type 'alsamixer'. Maybe you just need to unmute your external speakers? smile

2) Audacity is more of an audio editor than a jukebox type of program. VLC is the CrunchBang default; I also like Rhythmbox for that purpose but there are many options. Do you have a specific problem/question with playing media?

Re: settings

Thanks very much.
I have entered the alsamixer and am trying to see something like unmute.

I have gone to VLC and am trying to make it default.

( I work in media advertising and have to handle short audia/visual advertising clips my office send to proof)

Re: settings

press alt+f2 and type in xfce4-mixer maybe that will look more familiar, unmute speaker

Re: settings

if you have chosen you favorite program to open a filetype you can right click on the file and go to "properties" there should be an option like "open with" and you can change that. but remember to check the box saying something like "always use this prog for this filetype"
