Topic: New Level of Broken

My whole system became read only and I cant even log in anymore. What can I do to fix it or how can I get my old files out? Im using a LiveCD right now to type this.

So how did your system become read-only?  What have you been playing around with today?

Re: New Level of Broken

idk, I was deleting things from my flash drive but one file refused to go away, it was read-only for some strange reason. I did the view folder as root thing and tried to cut the file from there to the trash and at the same time tried to make some compressed files. One of those actions royally screwed my system. the IRC is no help what so ever either...

Re: New Level of Broken

So... you're requesting help, right? Please give us a minimum of information about your problem. How do you know it's read only? What does your fstab say? What does the errorlog say? The infos while trying to boot the system?

If you're on a live CD, it's perfect. Mount the drive and copy your files.

Re: New Level of Broken

Happened to me several times, but after reboot the problem was solved. Did you try this?

Re: New Level of Broken

Similar to this I have had files refuse to delete from my SD card telling me it is a read only drive, regardless of actual permissions, however taking it out and reinserting it a few times will solve the problem. Perhaps there is some kernel issue that causes drives to occasionally seem read only? I have yet to have it happen on my SATA drive on my netbook however, since it isn't hot swappable, I assume I would just reboot it and the problem would go away...

If it somehow stuck in RO I assume ensuring the permissions on the files and making sure fstab allows writing would be the first places to check.....
