Topic: Problems with DVD Playback

Though this problem is limited to a very select few DVD's, I'm getting some error messages. I've installed libdvd* files, and codecs, and many things, but I'm still having trouble with a couple of DVD's that work in Windows right upon insert. At first I thought it was an issue with the region, but I can't see this doing it for only one platform. Anyway, here's the error I get on one of the limited discs that won't play, and I've tried looking up this code, and implementing a whole load of things, but so far nothing has worked. I hope I'm not missing something stupid, but I think I need some help with this now.

Error code:

Re: Problems with DVD Playback

Maybe it would help to upgrade your VLC to current? (v1.1.3 I believe) Add deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu lucid-getdeb apps
to your source.list and you should be able to upgrade VLC.

Re: Problems with DVD Playback

Have you tried playing the DVDs with another program like mplayer?

I added that, and cannot update vlc. It gives me a message that a whole bunch of files have been kept back, including vlc and vlc-nox. I'm not sure why it won't upgrade, but in synaptic, it had a lot of dependencies that weren't being met or upgraded.

Yeah, I've been getting errors in every player.

Try this to get a newer VLC instead:

BTW do you have any other Linux machine where you can test the DVDs?

I've tried those two things, and then I tried removing and then reinstalling vlc to get:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
vlc: Depends: vlc-nox (= 1.0.6-1~getdeb1) but 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libfribidi0 (>= 0.19.2) but 0.10.9-1 is to be installed
Depends: libqtcore4 (>= 4:4.6.1) but 4.5.0-0ubuntu4.3 is to be installed
Depends: libqtgui4 (>= 4:4.6.1) but 4.5.0-0ubuntu4.3 is to be installed
Depends: libx264-85 but it is not installable
Depends: libxcb-keysyms1 (>= 0.3.6) but it is not installable
Recommends: vlc-plugin-pulse (= 1.0.6-1~getdeb1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

At random, I tried installing libqtgui4 to test if I really didn't have those dependencies, and it said it was already at the newest version. I'm at a loss for how to meet this dependencies if I already have them.

I could test it on a live CD, but no other Linux machines setup at the moment.

Re: Problems with DVD Playback

Make sure you remove the previous source (the one mentioned by pghjake) then do "sudo apt-get update" and reinstall vlc.

I removed the previous source, and updated, then tried to install vlc. It's giving me less dependency errors, so something else must be causing those ones. I'll give you my dependency errors, following by my sources.list so you can verify that:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
vlc: Depends: libqtcore4 (>= 4.5.1) but 4.5.0-0ubuntu4.3 is to be installed
Depends: libqtgui4 (>= 4.5.1) but 4.5.0-0ubuntu4.3 is to be installed
Depends: libxcb-xv0 (>= 1.2) but 1.1.93-0ubuntu3.1 is to be installed

Read the second link I posted. I posted the fixed for that error.

I did that step originally in synaptic, and it still gives off those 3 dependency issues.
