Topic: [Solved] Fresh install won't boot

Hi!

I recently bought a little nettop atom PC, and tried to install #! statler 2 on it but I post it here becouse I don't really think it's a statler related problem.
After I fought my way through some other problems I found one I can't really fight:
The installer finishes fine then after reboot nothing is loaded. Like nothing has happened.
I don't really have an error message or anything except "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"... Maybe you can give some clues where can I begin to search for a solution? I don't have a clue. Seems like the grub doesn't starting...?

There is no cd-rom so I used an usb stick to install. There is one 500 gb harddrive on SATA port 0. In the bios there is an opition "Configure SATA as IDE/AHCI" what I set on IDE.
There is some data on the harddisk on the first 200 gb (its an NTFS partition with no OS). I installed the #! on the rest and the grub is on the default place(hd0). In /dev the hard disk appears as sda.

?:(

Re: [Solved] Fresh install won't boot

sounds like a bios problem. what did you try in bios? can you try to use the hd as sata?

Re: [Solved] Fresh install won't boot

I don't have the option to use it as SATA  only IDE / AHCI and I couldn't find anything related to this.

I tried to change the Configure SATA as AHCI option. (then reinstall without success.)
I tried to Pre-delay the harddisk with 5 second.
I switched the hd (physically) from sata port 1 to 0. It was on 1 originally at the first install, didn't work. Then I switched it to 0 and reinstall - same result.

I have a seperate boot menu at start but the boot order is fine in the bios too. Actually since I disabled the network boot (and plug out the usb-stick) the only opition is to boot from the hd.

The motherboard is a D510MO.

here I think you can check if there is anything in the bios related.

Thanks for the quick reply btw smile

Re: [Solved] Fresh install won't boot

My HDD is also set to AHCI, but I don't have any problems. So that can't be it.

I don't have any more input that that though

Let's do it and don't screw it.

Re: [Solved] Fresh install won't boot

Some update :
I put the grub on the usb-stick. Now the OS boots up fine... that probably narrows the problem : it must be something about the hard-drive not being at the right place/sumthin... I'm really not a mastermind at this.
Last time I had problem with things like these I had to put sume jumpers to the right place and I assume that is not the case...
(hmm *go and check if the drive have jumpers* there are some pins, but no jumper...)
Is it right that the drive is sda and not hda?
What can possibly stop the grub from booting?

Re: [Solved] Fresh install won't boot

Solved. It's quite embarassing.

The problem was that at the install I didn't set the bootable flag. yikes

This is the first pc where I tried to install linux without any OS already installed on the machine hence I never really noticed it or that it should be checked...

Anyway, it works. Except the network connection. But ah well... nothing is simple.
